Samsun Grand Prix March 28-30 2014

The Samsun Grand Prix  begins in a little more than 3 hours from now. It is a 1:00am California start time.  The action will take place on 3 mats.  Here is the link to the webcast.

http://212.227.28.227/live/index.php

There are a total of 355 competitors who will be competing in Samsun. This is big difference from the 192 that were in Tbilisi last week.  Once again it is in the 3 day format which I definitely prefer. The Japanese team is missing from Samsun as it was missing from Tbilisi last week. For some reason, the Japanese haven't shown up to these two tournaments, though they do make a showing at Duesseldorf.  If you are an athlete looking to move up the IJF World Ranking List, it gets a lot easier when the Japanese aren't there.

You can see the pool sheets here:

http://www.ippon.org/gp_tur2014.php

Originally, the pool sheets showed the return of Kim Polling. However, she did not make the trip and will be out until the European Championships next month if her Facebook page is to be believed. Kim has been dealing with injuries for much of the last 9 months. The question is will she be back to full Polling power by the time of the World Championships?

The Russians have once again sent a large team of 24 athletes, second only to host country Turkey's 49.  But my concern is USA Judo, and there are three athletes competing here. They are Travis Stevens in -81kg, Alisha Galles in -57kg and Hannah Martin in -63kg.

There are more competitors in -81kg this week, but I'm not sure it is tougher than what Travis faced last week. Travis comes in again as the number 2 seed, but Tchrikishvili is not here this week. The number one seed is Victor Penalber (BRA). To get to the finals against Victor, he will likely face Maresch of Germany in the semis in a repeat of the Duesseldorf finals a few weeks ago.  Travis does have a tough first fight in Margiani (GEO), so even getting out of the pool is not a given. That said, I think Travis is in a zone right now, and I think he gets his 2nd Grand Prix gold of 2014.

I like Alisha Galles.  She is a young girl who moved from New Mexico to  Southern California and then went up to SJSU for her education. This is her first time fighting at -57kg, the weight division of teammate and World and Olympic medalist Marti Malloy.  She is coming down from -63kg for this event. Will she go back to -63kg? I think that is likely unless she is content to be a 2020 contender instead of a 2016 contender at the Olympics.  She has a great fighting spirit, and I think you will hear a lot about her in the coming years.  That said, I don't think her time is now. She is in Pool C, which has players like Caprioriu (ROM) and Hevondian (UKR) to get past..and that is assuming she can get past her first round opponent Blot (FRA).  I don't know much about Blot, but she did take a 5th in Paris. I could see Alisha medaling in this tournament...in 2016. Keep your eye on her.

Hannah Martin comes in as number 2 seed again in -63kg. That said, seeding comes from WRL points, and they don't necessarily reflect the reality of the true ranking of athletes. I think the young Unterwurzacher (AUT) is the one to beat in Pool C.  Yarden Gerbi (ISR) is back again this week. The number one ranked -63kg player is likely to be back in the finals this week. I expect her to take the gold. No big surprises there.

While USA Judo athletes are the only ones I care about, the -66kg division looks both tough and interesting. In -73kg, I am think Iartcev (RUS) the number 4 seed is ready for a breakout performance. Kelmendi (KOS) is the obvious bet in -52kg.

I won't watch the prelims, but I should be able to update the Finals Block as I will be watching them from my desk at work.  This is the final tournament of the first leg of the 2014 IJF World Tour and I will be updating statistics as well for the first 3 months of the year at the end of the tournament.

Watched the Laetitia Blot (FRA) vs Alisha Galles (USA) match on rewind. The fight took place on Mat 3.  Blot defeated Alisha about halfway through the match when they engaged in newaza.  Blot transitioned nicely from a shime waza attack into a juji gatame that brought the tap from Alisha.  Prior to the tap, Alisha was down by shido.

Blot is fighting for the gold medal, so I guess that 5th place finish in Paris was a sign of good things to come. I thought Alisha was fairly aggressive in the match, but she really attacked too many times without a great grip on the gi.  I believe that Alisha will continue to improve, and will be taking IJF World Tour medals within two years. I like her chances and Colton Brown's chances of doing well in Tokyo Olympics in 2020 if they stay with the sport and the SJSU program.

Finals Block should be up shortly.

Samsun Grand Prix  Bronze Medal and Final Matches  Day 1

-48kg Bronze Medal

Akkus (TUR) defeats Moskatt (ITA) by shidos.  It was 2-1.  Akkus picked up the first shido at 1:10. Moskatt picks up one about a minute later. With 1:00 remaining Moskatt picks up her second.

Lima (GBS) defeats Rosseneu (ISR) by ippon.  This is why I love judo. Young girl from a small country comes out and beats a seasoned competitor who began her career in France. It is a beautiful ko soto gari as a counter that gets the call of waza ari and she immediately follows up with osaekomi for the ippon.

-60kg Bronze Medal

Raymond (FRA) beats Paischer (AUT) by ippon.  Paischer picked up an early shido from a flop n drop seoinage. Sorry Paischer, this isn't 2008.  Around the 2:20 mark, Raymond throws Paischer for waza ari with o soto gari. With 1:00 left, Raymond attacks with ashiwaza and Paischer goes down to all fours.  Make that all 3's because Raymond has the arm and attacks juji gatame. Paischer taps.

Mshvidobadze (RUS) defeats Mushkiyev by ippon.  It was tied at a shido apiece when Mshvidobadze counters Muskiyev's o goshi by stepping around and attacking what looks like harai goshi.

-52kg Bronze Medal

Chitu (ROU) defeats Euranie (FRA) by ippon.  Chitu counters Euranie with what looks like a seoi nage technique and gets a waza ari call, and goes immediately into osaekomi and holds it for yuko. They come back to the center on the mate, and judges overrule the waza ari and award ippon for the throw. It is over 1:02 into the match.

Tarangul (GER) beats Cohen (ISR) by waza ari.  Cohen had gotten an early shido. Later in the match, Tarangul gets a waza ari by countering Cohen's hip throw by pulling her back and to the ground. Tarangul gets a shido with 22 seconds remaining and Cohen picks up a yuko with 3 seconds remaining as she counters Tarangul's uchimata outside the contest area. It isn't enough as Tarangul holds on for the win and bronze medal.

-66kg Bronze Medal

Chibana (BRA) defeats Dovdon (MGL) by shido.  It was 2-0 and happened at the 1:57 and 3:10 marks. Dovdon looked like he had an ippon from a big ko soto gake counter that went off the mat. No score. Only reason I can think of is that mate had already been called.

Oates (GBR) defeats Sandal (TUR) by ippon.  Sandal picks up an early shido. Oates scores waza ari with sumi gaeshi and follows up into osaekomi for the ippon.

-57kg Bronze Medal

Karakas (HUN) defeats Filmozer (AUT) by shidos. It was 2-1.

Caprioriu (ROU) stuns Amaron (SUI) with ippon in the first 18 seconds. Threw her with sode tsuri komi goshi.

Samsun Grand Prix  Bronze Medal and Final Matches  Day 1

-48kg Gold Medal

Dolgova (RUS) defeats Cherniak (UKR) by ippon.  Scores waza ari only 14 seconds into the match with a counter. Cherniak responds on the next exchange with a yuko of her own from an o uchi/uchi mata combo. The ippon comes at 1:56 when Dolgova hits the ashiwaza for ippon. Looks like ko soto to me.

-60kg Gold Medal

Mudranov (RUS) defeats Smetov (KAZ)  by ippon.  Mudranov picks up the first shido and Smetov gets one to tie it up. With 1:27 left, the action starts as Mudranov counters Smetov's uchi mata for waza ari.  He then counters Smetov with a giant ura nage though Smetov lands on his side for yuko.  With 6 seconds left, Mudranov scores his second waza ari for the awasete ippon with o goshi/o uchi combo.

-66kg Gold Medal

Larose (FRA) defeats Korval (FRA) by waza ari.  Larose picks up first shido and then is followed by Korval. Larose picks up second shido at 3:02.  With 1:13 left the camera puts the spotlight on Korval, and I think he looks more tired than Larose. But Korval keeps attacking. Double shidos come at 25 seconds. With 5 seconds left Larose attacks uchimata and scores the waza ari. That's how it ends, and I'm sure that Korval will be second guessing himself for a few days.

-57kg Gold Medal.

Blot (FRA) defeats Roper (GER) by ippon.  They pick up simultaneous shidos in the first minute. Blot draws first blood with a waza ari from an o uchi gari. With 53 seconds left, Blot picks up a second shido. With 43 seconds remaining, Roper counters Blot with what looks like ko soto gake to me. The referee calls ippon. They go back to the line, but the judges overrule the referee and Roper is downgraded to yuko. With 23 seconds left, Blot sees a opening and attacks a strong ippon seoi nage for the second waza ari and Day 1 finishes with an ippon victory for Blot.  I guess Alisha Galles got a bad draw for her first IJF World Tour event at -57kg.

Thanks for the info. I see Stevens lost in repechage. Hanna Martin is up for Bronze in 63K. I mentioned earlier this year that watch out in 81k this German kid Alexander Wieczerzak in the finals against fellow German Maresch. He is a former junior world Champion. Next major star in 81K.

Travis Stevens placed 7th at Samsun.

Travis had a first round bye. His second round contest was against Margiani (GEO) which he won by hansoku make. His pool semi-final match he defeated Chen (ISR) by shidos 2-0.  He lost the quarterfinal match against Khabachirov (RUS) on shidos 3-1.  He went to the repechage match where he faced Duminica (MDA). Each player picked up some shidos, but Duminica caught Travis for waza ari with a sumi gaeshi a couple minutes into the match. The clock was out of view most of the match so cannot give an exact time.  Towards the end of the match in the last 20 seconds, Duminca countered Steven's ippon seoi nage for a yuko. That was the final score of the match.

Hannah Martin will be fighting for a bronze medal.  In her first round match against Dakovic (CRO) she threw her with ashi waza for no score as Dakovic landed on all 4's. However, she did turn her over and secured the osaekomi for ippon. Again, scoreboard is out of view.  In the next round she faced Akarsu (TUR). At the halfway mark she threw her with a beautiful ashi guruma.  She went to the quarter finals where she faced Unterwurzacher (AUT). It was a close match with Hannah down only by a shido. Near the midpoint mark of the match, Unterwurzacher counters Hannah and they land outside the mat. Unterwurzacher gets the osaekomi for ippon.  Hannah goes to repechage and Belakhal (ALG) is a no-show and Hannah gets the fusen sho. She will be going up against Gercsak (HUN) in one of the -63kg bronze medal matches.

I have to teach a class today, so I won't be doing the Finals block commentary live.

Samsun Grand Prix  Bronze Medal and Final Matches  Day 2

-63kg Bronze Medal

Getcsak (HUN) defeats Martin (USA) by ippon.  She scored waza ari with ko uchi about 1:10 into the match. Hannah gets up and looks hurt.  Hannah picks up two quick shidos. Getcsak gets the second waza ari with another ko uchi gari around 2:20 and gets the awasete ippon.

Gerbi (ISR) is stunned by Trajdos (GER) by the score of ippon.  Gerbi had this match well in hand. Gerbi draws first blood with a yuko score with what looks like tsuri goshi. She then gets a waza ari with what looks like koshi guruma but on replay looks more like maki komi.   With 1:30 remaining Gerbi starts picking up shidos and has 2 of them with 1 minute left.  With about 30 seconds left Trajdos attacks a hip throw for no score, but rolls into the osaekomi and Gerbi is not going to escape. Trajdos gets the call of ippon.

-73kg Bronze Medal

Vanlioglu (TUR) defeats Soroka (UKR) by shidos 2-1. Each of them score waza ari in the match. Vanliougu scores first with a big ko uchi makikomi about 50 seconds into the match. Soroka answered with a ko soto gake about mid point in the match for waza ari.  Not much else happens and the shidos on the board are the difference.

M. Ungvari (HUN) beats Macias (SWE) by ippon. He was down 3-1 in shidos with less than 2 minutes remaining. He attempts sutemi waza for no score but secures what looks like osaekomi and is called osaekomi and Macias taps.  However, replay shows that he actually worked the shimewaza for the tap. First shime waza finish we remember seeing in Men's competition this leg of the IJF World Tour. Will need to check later.

-70kg Bronze Medal

Niang (MAR) overwhelms Wildikan (ISR) and beats her by ippon. Niang gets an early shido and it seems to light a fire.  She immediately comes back and scores yuko with o goshi around the 45 second mark.  Around the 1:10 mark she adds a waza ari from another o goshi.  Niang gets the second waza ari around 1:45 when Wildikan tries to grip over the back and Niang throws her for the third time with o goshi.

Pinot (FRA) gets the 2-1 shido victory over Emane (FRA).  Not much else to say.

-81kg Bronze Medal

A. Ungvari (HUN) defeats Khabachirov (RUS) by shidos 2-1.  The Ungvari brothers both get bronze in Samsun, but Miklos had more style in victory than Attila.

Duminica (MDA) defeats Bottieau (BEL) by shidos 2-1.  It is the 3rd 2-1 shido victory in a row in this block. Are they all using the same playbook.  Wish I could get the last 23 minutes of my life back.

Hoping that the Gold Medal matches are more interesting than the last 3 matches.

Samsun Grand Prix  Bronze Medal and Final Matches  Day 2

-63kg Gold Medal Match

Unterwuzacher (AUT) defeats Zouak (MAR) by ippon.  She got the cycle against Zouak.  Scores waza ari on first exchange with what looks like de ashi barai.  She gets yuko with ko soto gake around 1:30 mark and goes into osaekomi and Zouak taps. Zouak looks like she hurt left shoulder on the ko soto gake on replay. Looked painful.

-73kg Gold Medal Match

Voelk (GER) defeats Orjuov (AZE) by ippon in golden score. They go into golden score with 3-3 shidos. Voelk was leading 3-2 in shidos when he picked up a 3rd shido for defensive gripping with 3 seconds remaining in regulation.  The match goes 44 seconds into golden score when he throws him with a huge tsuri goshi with a deep over the back grip for ippon.  Looks Iliadeseque which is a word I just made up. Replay shows the leg came up, so maybe uchi mata? I'm going to stay with tsuri goshi. Shouldn't have waited so long to actually try and throw him, but worth the wait I guess.

-70kg Gold Medal Match

Vargas Koch (GER) defeats Conway (GBR) by yuko.  Conway was down 3-0 on shidos, but with 26 seconds remaining Vargas Koch scores with o uchi gari. Ref calls waza ari, but replay shows side judges are right to downgrade it to yuko.

-81kg Gold Medal Match

Maresch (GER) defeats Wieczerzak (GER) by shidos 3-2. Not a great ending to the day, but the German team comes away with 3 gold medals in the finals. Not to mention Wieczerak's silver from this all German final.

Hannah Martin injured her right knee in the bronze match. She fought a lefty also. From an Osoto/kosoto(?)combination. The 81K finals was not a good fight to watch. Wieczerzak did not take it to Maresh like he normally does to his opponents. It will interesting who makes their Olympic team in 2016 at 81K. Stevens looked a little worn out. Probably from last week in Tbilisi and back to back events.

Samsun Grand Prix  Bronze Medal and Final Matches  Day 3

-90kg Bronze Medal

Magomedov (RUS) defeats Dvarby (SWE) by waza ari.  Absolutely beautiful tai otoshi at the 1:15 mark. The rest of the match Magomedov picks up a couple shidos and Dvarby gets a shido as well.

Iddir (FRA) beats Synyavsky (UKR) by ippon.  Throws him with a big sode tsuri komi goshi in the first 25 seconds of the match.  The stuff of highlight films.  Really nice throws in both -90kg matches. Good start to the finals block on the final day.

-78kg Bronze Medal

Maranic (CRO) defeats Tsimashenka (BLR) by shidos 3-2. That's all I have to say about that.

Camara (FRA) wins by ippon over Ouallal (ALG).  Match was fairly dull with the exception of one o uchi/ko soto gake combo by Camara at midpoint that did not score. Camara was winning by 2-1 shidos and then hit the ko soto gake for waza ari with about 30 seconds remaining. She transitioned immediately into the osaekomi and got the awasete ippon.

-100kg Bronze Medal

Frey (GER) catches Gasimov (AZE) for ippon in the first 35 seconds. He attempts tai otoshi and Gasimov goes to all fours.  Frey immediately attacks, rolls him and makes him tap from the shime waza. It is okuri eri jime.  Very, very nice.

Mahjoub (IRI) defeats Pacek (SWE) by ippon with an even quicker shime waza than Frey's.  The match is over in 15 seconds. Pacek attempts sutemi waza, misses and rolls to all fours. Mahjoub, taking a page out of Frey's playbook jumps on Pacek, but instead of rolling, walks the okuri eri jime around Pacek. Pacek taps. Awesome. Turtling is becoming a very bad strategy in World Tour judo.

+78kg Bronze Medal

Kocaturk (TUR) defeats Kara (TUR) by ippon. Another quickie. This one ends in 16 seconds as she throws her with o soto gari. Kara looks like she hurt her ankle during the throw.

Altheman (BRA) defeats Trabelsi (TUN) by ippon.  This one is 35 seconds!  She counters her with looks like yoko guruma to me.

+100kg Bronze Medal

Matiashvili (GEO)defeats Saidov (RUS) by fusen sho. Saidov is injured.

Bondarenko (UKR) beats Breitbarth by ippon. This one is 39 seconds! Throws him for ippon with what looks like a ko soto gake.

Great action in the bronze medal matches today. First time this year the heavyweight matches didn't put me to sleep for the most part.   Hope the Gold Medal matches are as impressive.

-90kg Gold Medal

Gvinisashvili (GEO) beats Odenthal (GER) by ippon.  This one is 18 seconds. Looks like o goshi.

-78kg Gold Medal

Malzahn (GER) gets a fusen sho victory over Powell (GBR).  Don't know what happened here.

-100kg Gold Medal

Maret (FRA) defeats Bisultanov (RUS) by yuko.  He gets a pair of them. Both throws are maki komi. First one is at 3:17 and the second at 4:06

+78kg Gold Medal

Cheikh Rouhou (TUN) defeats Kuelbs (GER) by ippon. She was down by 2-1 shidos.  With a little more than 2 minutes remaining, she throws Kuelbs for yuko and rolls into the osaekomi for ippon. Throw looks like a front suplex type of throw.

+100kg Gold Medal

Pakevicius (LTU) catches Okruashvili (GEO) for ippon. Great uchimata at the 4:06 mark. It was 3-2 shidos in Okruashvili's favor in what had been a very dull match. Nice ending to the tournament.

Thanks for the great report. I will watch the replays of day 3 Finals on YouTube. Impressed with some new players ( Iddir (FRA) example. Anyone know why Asley Gonzalez is not competing in 2014? #1 player in 90K.

You're welcome.  I still have to do the penalty tallies but Day 3's pools have not been updated with the penalties. I have Day 1 & 2.  Since this is the last tounament of the first leg of the IJF World Tour, I'm going to also do a post with the stats from the Paris Grand Slam, Duesseldorf, Tbilisi, and Samsun Grand Prix.  The stats should be more revealing with the larger sample.

I'm not sure why Gonzalez hasn't been competing. The only thing I can imagine is some of the players are healing up for when the Olympic qualification period begins.  Polling is not returning till the European Championships. Marti Malloy has been absent, though I don't know why. Kayla we know is recovering. Same for Teddy Riner.

Great to see some newcomers in day 3 finals going for ippon. The higher level experienced players play it safe when they get ahead by yuko/wazari. And they avoid risks of getting scored on which lead to yuko/wazari scores. Impressed with Iddir (FRA) and the 90k Georgiian gold medal winner. The Georgians are the best counter throwing players.

The Day 3 Pool Sheets have still not been updated with penalties and the times of the penalties and techniques.  I decided to do it by myself.

My methodology was first to check the pool sheets and look for matches with identical scores. These are the matches that would have been decided by shidos.  I then looked at all the matches that were listed as ippon and recorded which of those matches were actually hansoku make. I make the assumption that the IJF correctly recorded the scores.  The video was the official IJF webcast of the Samsun Grand Prix Preliminaries block which includes the semi-fnal and repechage matches.  I watched the event using the Firefox browser which allows you to see the action on the individual mats.  There were 3 mats in use this day.  The event can be seen at this link.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZj4rwtVc9k&list=UUeYa3QaP2n7I8SpGSqD-kUQ

I had previously watched the entire Finals Block for Day 3 so it was not necessary to review. There was only one match decided by shidos in the finals.

The matches that took place on Mat 1 were:

-100kg Division

+78kg Division

The matches that took place on Mat 2 were:

-90kg Pools A & C.  Semi-finals

-78kg Pools A & C. Semi-finals

+100kg Pools A & C. Semi-finals

The matches that took place on Mat  3 were:
