I don’t think a katana can defeat European armor or chain mail so let’s throw out metal armor. Could an elite Samurai beat and equally skilled European sword man with a shield, but no armor for either fighter?
- Samurai
- Euro guy with shield

I heard a guy with a spear beat Musashi but that isn’t discussed. Spears are difficult to defeat if you are fighting in an open area
On a side note there was that suit that was supposed to register death blows but protected the person. I was hoping for some medieval fighting to end these hypotheses
There was a story about Portuguese swordsmen defeating samurai in duals. The article had stated the samurai had a dual sided katana made to be able to counter whatever move the Portuguese were using as the samurai were too slow having to turn their blade in the rotation.
Did the samurai win after?
Having a shield is a huge bonus for the euro swordsman
I want to say yes but I had read this over 10yrs ago while working a slow night shift. Remember it stating the Portuguese had one a few individual matches prior.
I love the samurai aura as much as anyone, but a heavier double edged sword beats a katana all day. With a shield it’s really almost unfair.
Probably the biggest edge a Samurai brings to the fight isn’t the sword, but clothing hiding his leg movements.
Three other real issue is the quality of the weapons. The broadsword / rapier / shield it’s going to be made from steel, whereas most katanas were made of iron.
Iron doesn’t cut steel. A katana will be bent to shit after a few shield strikes.
Katanas are not great at stabbing, the arc limits their reach. A rapier would be hard to overcome with two sides and superior stabbing ability.
Samurai were 5’3 overrated midgets
So the questions is, who wins: a guy with one weapon vs a guy with 2 weapons?
Spear IS the king.
I learned that as a kid yard fighting my brothers using a mop handle.
Samurai. Because I want to believe.
Katanas were mostly effective on prisoners and peasants.
Dual Sai
No can defense
dual means 2 not to “duel” mi pata lol the sai was a mele or brawl weapon not one for dueling
