Saul "Canelo" Alvarez Will Be the New Delahoya

LOL @ people complaining about his opponents. He's 21.

Personally, I think he gets hit way too much, but he's still very young.

I've heard he may be fighting Kirkland too. That would be a war.

Bobby Lupo - The Next De la Hoya label is a curse. Pavlik and Lee were motoring along until they got stuck with that label

I don't think that it's a curse. The reason that fighters with that label don't live up to expectations is that it's tossed around too liberally. In addition to the guys you mentioned, Francisco Bojado, Victor Ortiz, Jesus Gonzalez and Erick DeLeon (who's still an amateur) have all been called the "the next De La Hoya." Those are just the guys that I could think of off the top of my head. Boxing promoters and the networks are desperate for a photogenic fighter with legit skills whom they can shove down the throats of casual fans.

Great post. Totally agree. Bojado was a can't miss....until he missed. Prospects are hard to judge. I was really high on Saddam Ali, but I'm not sure anymore.

Right now I think that Chavez and Alvarez are a step above John Duddy (another one) but not ready for the real heavy hitters at the moment and may never be ready. They were both impressive in their last fights but also show a little of the chinks in their armor. Canelo was hit with every lazy jab Cintron threw after the first round and was tagged with solid shots. Chavez lost a round to Manfredo where he was out brawled and hit with shots that seemed to bother him and Manfredo is known for not being able to punch. Doesn't bode well for either guy when opponents (thats what Manfredo and Cintron were) are able to exploit a weakness. It's too early for that shit.

If by the next DLH, you mean he will lose in his biggest fights, then im not sure yet.. too early to tell

He'll become a De La Hoya level draw if he can catch Pacquiao or Mayweather at the end of their careers and steal a win over them. Talent wise, I don't think he's on that level.

If Cotto gets past Margarito, I'd love to see him fight Alvarez next. Put it on PPV and give them a 24/7 to introduce Alvarez to the casual American fans.

Btw, is the guy learning English yet?

Kirkland is not fighting Alvarez next at all.

I talked to him after his win over Angulo and the LAST thing anyone wants is him wrecking the money train.

They are cooking the Chavez bout and I see that being a year away.

My gut tells me we will see Alvarez vs Mosley.

Yes.

Shane Mosley.

I've heard unsubstantiated rumors and it makes sense to give him a marquee win over a beatable guy. Phone Post

I wouldn't write Mosely off if this bout materializes. Canelo is hittable, comes straight forward and isn't exactly fast. Shades of Margarito. No matter how old he is, Shane is still heavy handed and Canelo's style wouldn't trouble him like Manny of Floyd's did.

Not really Phone Post

I totally agree.

Mosley would get bludgeoned. Phone Post

In the same way Margarito bludgeoned him?

No. Alvarez would tool Margarito also.

Mosley is a terrible idea. Even half shot and 50 years old, he's far faster than Canelo and has the kind of power to shake him up. Pawel Wolak would be ideal, but he's not a big enough name. If Cotto looks shot against Margarito, then I suspect that they'll try him.

Yeah, Mosley is a terrible idea. Canelo doesn't smother nearly as much as Margarito, he isn't more physical or faster than him and his chin is knowhere near as good. Bad idea.

ramit upper -  He`s decent but he`s no Delahoya..

Say what you like about Oscar but he fought everyone & never faced a fighter with a losing record.

Alvarez has fought 39 bums & Ryan Rhodes.

He might be successful at MW but he`d get smashed at SMW.

I doupt it he jus fights bums Phone Post

Canelo has fought the appropriate guys for a 21 year old prospect. He just started adding the name brand opposition 6 fights ago. He's still dealing with guys past their expiration date. No need to feed him to the sharks yet or crash the money train

I realise that but my point is there simply won`t be enough big fights in the LMW & MW divisions for him to get anywhere close to Oscars legacy.

I don't even follow boxing, but just based on logic, how could you possibly ever know this? Are you psychic? What are the winning lotto numbers, by the way? Phone Post

These types of comparisons are the type that get falsely made time and time again. When I say that I mean that the original assumption by the OP is that DLH was some huge Mexican star and the question was whether or not Canelo will ever meet his greatness/popularity.

In reality Canelo is a bigger star now in Mexico than DLH ever was. DLH was American born and he beat the shit out of Chavez, because of these two factors he was never a big draw in Mexico. People just think he was because he's Mexican-American.

I'm not trying to belittle anyone or start an argument, I'm just pointing out that this happens a lot. Non-Mexicans seem to look at DLH as some huge Mexican star, but its completely false.

I suppose technically I could be wrong....but if the LMW & MW divisions over the next 15 or so years produce fighters of the same quality as Whitaker,Chavez(snr),Mayweather,Pacquiao,Hopkins,Trinidad & Mosely then i`ll shit in my hand & eat it.
