Yeah I wondering the same about the 50/50 hype. In No-Gi people using this position always to set up leglocks. Nothing new I think.
Dean Lister owned this position a long time ago, he's not the type of athlete that needed to rely on one position though so he was never instructional video/ world seminar tour famous for it.
braulio was using it on Jacare in their 2005 worlds match, but he was trying to set up a kneebar/toe hold.
I don't think anybody is arguing that the position has been around long before it became the new buzzword. The reason it is getting so much attention is the application of the position has changed to be used to stall, and limit the movement of the guy passing - making the strategy more of a slow-paced points match. Of course, since heel hooks aren't allowed in the major Gi tournaments, the options are limited to the rules of the tournament.
It will be interesting to see the position being used by Mendes and Hall in ADCC next month, where heel hooks are allowed.
