schools in Santa Monica?

I'll be moving to Santa Monica in the next month or so and am wondering if there are any places for a beginner to train in martial arts. I also want a place where my wife can learn self defense.

I've seen a BJJ school near where I'll be working on Ocean Park as well as a Hapkido school and I think there's a Danzan Ryu place around there too.

Has anyone studied at these places or any other MA places in that area? I'm trying to stick with places near the bus routes 'cause we won't be taking our car and it may be a while before I can buy a new one.

Thanks

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu is very close to where you're moving.

Hit up Eddie Bravo on that one.

Cool, thanks. I didn't know he was in that area.

West Hollywood and Santa Monica are neighboring cities.

Yeah, I live on the edge of Santa Monica and West LA and 10th Planet is an easy drive. It's at 7327 Santa Monica Blvd, inside the Bomb Squad Gym.

There's tons and tons of martial arts schools on the West side, but I don't know how many of them are actually any good.

What is your wife looking for as far as a self-defense class? Is she comfortable with something like BJJ? The Krav Maga school is also on the west side.

She's not too keen on BJJ especially since she never sees women in the places we've checked out. We're in Canada though. Maybe more women take it in the US. She wants a place where she can practice/train with women.

She doesn't want anything where she has to do forms either.

She understands that a woman should learn some kind of ground fighting since when they usually get attacked they get pulled to the ground, but she's intimidated when she sees a class and it's filled with big guys who are twice her size. Krav Maga might be interesting. Do they do groundwork?

I'm trying to find out if people know of good schools and when we move down there we'll proably check them out.

Check out the Krav Maga center in Los Angeles.

They have a National Training Center out there that I've been to... per what you're describing as far as what your ewife would like for a reality-based martial arts system that teaches male and female equally... this place is incredible. No kata bullshit, just straight up "how to defend and protect".

Krav Maga is ok. I have seen it and its good for women.

Personally, I'd rather do Judo or BJJ but my wife won't take anything unless I take it with her and I want her to learn something. She'd be open to either but like I said, most places we've seen don't have a lot of women in the class and she doesn't want to train with guys.

We'll look into the Krav Maga though.

Renato Magno's academy, Rickson' Gracie Academy, and Gracie Barra Culver City.

The Krav Maga National Training Center has BJJ classes I believe...
