The UFC has offered WEC champion Scott Smith a whopping $2000 to show and $2000 to win. Scott though is not jumping at the offer...considering WEC paid him a lot more for his last fight against Justin Levens. The UFC wanted him to face David Terrel. This is according to MMAWEEKLY.
Okay the UFC just sold over 350,000 pay per views and sold out the Mandalay Bay 5 weeks in advanced with record ticket prices. They just sold out Arrowhead Pond in 3 days and they offer Scott Smith, who is one of the most talented and exciting fighters out there a measily $2000???? The entry level pay has to be increased for now on, this has to stop. Entry level should be raised to at least $5000.
The guy is a stud, he's the WEC Champion which sells out at all their events and he has a loyal following. So in all honesty he would be able to sell some tickets and a few pay per views I'm sure. I'm not saying pay him $500,000 but I think $5000 would be a little more fair.
"well...its not just 2k..its 2k plus a huge opportunity...if you think you are the best, you will bet on yourself to take the small pay and turn that into something bigger down the line..."
Goku, this is correct, but I believe there comes a point when those in power exploit that position of power and don't pay the workers enough, despite no other opportunity.
David Terrel is not exactly a sure fight for anyone. Sure he had one bad fight against Tanner but the kid is tough as nails. I mean what if he goes out and gets destroyed in 20 seconds like what happened to Matt Lindland? Stranger things have happened and he is taking a huge chance risking career ending injuries ect... I mean would $2000 be worth it then?
It would be like saying a minor-league allstar, ala Felix Hernandez has never won a big league game, and thus, should have been paid $17 his first start, and $25 meal money, despite proving at least talent already.
The other shows, are in essence, the proving grounds to make it to the "Superbowl" of mma. Pay should go up accordingly if you make the big show.
I'm not sure but MMAWEEKLY said it was considerbly more. Some of you think he was just given a winning lottery ticket but he wasn't. He is being given a very dangerous opponent, who potentially could end up making him look very bad.
UFC will never be what they want, because of the way they act. A top NHL prospect, a winner, top draft pick gets a good dollar, much more than a veteran jobber and way higher than minimum salary.
Yet UFC wants the top upcoming prospects, from the minors, but want to pay them shiate, until they prove themselves. Its only a matter of time until UFC becomes second fiddle to someone else who wants to spend a bit more and pay guys what they deserve.
