Sensitive Question

So, the other night while browsing through galleries on a reasonably well known porn site, I came across a number of images which I suspect would be illegal. I used the site's 'Report' function to flag some of them, and then quickly moved on. In retrospect, however, I don't really trust the site to remove the images, and they really ought to be. I have considered calling the police department in whose jurisdiction this site operates, if I can figure that out, but I am concerned by a legal question.

Since I viewed these images, however inadvertently, I technically downloaded them to my computer. Does that in itself constitute a crime, and do I put myself at risk by reporting this site?

I know this is not necessarily the best place to come with a question like this, but it's the best I have available at the moment. What do you lawyerly types think?

Criminal statutes differ from state to state.  However, I would be surprised by any possession of child pornography statute that did not have an intent element.  So contacted the police should be ok.  That said, you can always do it anonymously as well.

tell them your friend was visiting and he's a total perv. and unfortunately during his visit, you had to take a shit...leaving him unattended. If asked his name, plead the 5th amendment. This is solid advice.

if its a well known porn site, chances are its nothing illegal and you are just old and think 18yr old girls are younger than they actually are. its not like child porn just pops up on mainstream porn sites and you randomly stumble across it...pretty sure that shit is only found in the creepy dark corners of the interwebs.

depending on the jurisdiction, local PD might not have enough resources to really investigate the issue. State police or feds would be more likely to have established internet crimes departments who have the resources to really follow through.

whether it constitutes a crime and whether you put yourself at risk by involving the police are two completely different questions. non-criminal acts are prosecuted all the time.
