Seth's Non-Event: New Sam Sheridan Article

Seth’s non-event

October 13, 2008

By Sam Sheridan

The mainstream media outlets, from the LA Times to Yahoo!, have gotten ahold of Seth Petruzelli’s comments after the Kimbo Slice upset. Seth said something about being paid to keep it standing, that it was “worth his while.” Since this, alarms and outcry has been building, and Elite XC has been trying to run damage control. Promotion consultant Gary Shaw claim it was about a “knockout bonus“.

It's fantastic, japetto! His next one is on the way so make sure to pick it up soon. It's also in paperback now

japetto - I still need to get that book!

+1

A very good read.

Thanks y'all...

Thanks Elias for putting that up, I think it's something that we all need to think about more, I didn't quite nail it-- there's something corrosive about "fighting exciting," something sacrificial...

and I saw on Sherdog an article (I think Jake Rossen) that had some similar sentiment.

For instance this upcoming Wanderlei Silva-Rampage fight--third in an incredibly brutal trilogy that Silva won two of. These fights take so much out of these guys, they need to be worth it, you know?

Ali-Frazier 3, Thrilla in Manila, one of the most brutal fights in history, Ali said "We went to Manila in the prime of our lives, and we came back old men."

Morning coffee rant #24312

Good stuff, Sam and thanks for reading everyone else!

I agree that there is "something corrosive about 'fighting exciting...'"

Your morning coffee rants are always welcome at InsideFighting :)

Way off topic here, so apologies, but the best sports writer I've ever read is Hugh McIlvanney - this his piece written after The Rumble In The Jungle

Cool, thanks steve!

Thanks EC.

Fighters Heart is a very recommended read

I'm wondering if the nature of either the fights which Sam gives as examples(Ali-Frazier or Silva/Jackson) were significantly influenced by any promotional 'pep talks' or incentives.  My gut tells me these, and countless other classics, were products of two fighters who needed no additional motivation.

Scott Adams and Joe Silva have both been on a tear lately putting together exciting, fan-friendly fights.  It seems to me like a promotion can have a more significant influence on the entertainment level of its' fights with competent matchmaking at this level.

Are Set's hands even taped? Aside from the tape around the wrist of the glove I don't see any. Unless this is Seth's way that is kind of weird.

No problem, thank you for visiting IF

 thanks Kirik!

Old Feller
matchmaking, and what Joe Silva does, is really interesting. I agree, a true classic isn't forced or foisted on us by a promoter, they try but it just occurs...

that being said, I think the UFC has gotten big and important enough that there should probably be a clear ranking system and road to the title. Not just competent matchmaking, in other words. Transparency.

And some guys don't tape, or just tape a little... (to jkartigue)

Thanks for the responses, Sam. I think the UFC has/is considering a ranking system of their own

Good, wasn't it? Can't wait for Sam's next book. Sounds incredible! You guys won't believe all the top names that will be in that one
