It's not that he doesn't have takedown skills, it's that his ego is too big to know when he's being tooled on his feet.
It's not that his ego is too big, it is that his knees are both shot.
frank has never been known for his wrestling ability and cung has shown he's damn good wrestler, so it's not like he could just "take cung to the ground".
It's not that his takedowns aren't that great, and it's not that his knees are shot, and it's not that his ego is too big, it's that he wasn't going to be able to get Cung down and keep him down, and he knew it.
Frank wanted to at least try to beat Cung on his feet. I think the 4th and 5th rounds he would have taken Cung down thinking he could get a quick win whenever he wanted.
Frank is more concerned with putting on a show than winning fights. He wanted to put on a standup fight to put on a show for the fans and to try to prove how good of a standup fighter he is.
He's almost the anti-Tim Sylvia. Sylvia is only concerned about winning, and doesn't care how he does it (boxing against Nog, clinching with Vera, jabbing AA to death). He just wants to put himself in the best position to win the current fight. Frank wants to try to prove he's better than the other guy at the other guy's strength (out brawling Baroni, trying to win a kick boxing match with Le).
It wasn't that "it's that he wasn't going to be able to get Cung down and keep him down, and he knew it."
IT's that: He tried multiple times to take Cung down, and Cung was too skilled and athletic for Sham.
I was disappointed that the commentators were not acknowledging that Sham tried repeatedly and unsuccessfully to bring the match to the ground. Cung acknowledged it in his interview, which was nice.

bad knees and shitty wrestling to start off with.
It's not that his takedowns aren't that great, and it's not that his knees are shot, and it's not that his ego is too big, it's not that he wasn't going to be able to get Cung down and keep him down, it's a simple fact:
CATCH WRESTLING IS NO MATCH FOR KUNG FU.
