I have this conversation every year or so with friends. Imo rap is a mirror to the streets. It's not causing the violence. There was violence and drugs before rap was popular. Now that it's mainstream at the same time as the internet blew up you are seeing more about the violence and drugs.
Just shows how strong our 2nd amendment is. Disagreements are settled, permanently. They keep it in house & don't dial 911 to resolve the dispute. Just like the wild, wild west days and what our founding fathers wanted. Hell our government does it on a global scale all over the planet. Saudi Arabia takes down our towers on 9/11? F.U. Iraq. While bad things in the urban community existed before rap music, there's certainly a feedback loop occuring that is normalizing and to an extent glorifying the thug lifestyle.
I don't think video games cause violence or death metal makes you do evil shit, and I'm very much so on the side of free speech, expression, etc...
That being said, it would be disingenuous to not establish that rap music is different from these other forms of entertainment because it is so closely intertwined with the primarly black urban experience. A key rap ethos is with regards to how authentic a person is in their anti-social, illegal behavior.
So yes, rap is a legitimate form of expression, but it also holds true imo that it has a net negative effect on urban youth by legitimizing, and glorifying a specific subculture.
