SI Article: Dana White avoiding Rousey/Cyborg

"She wants nothing to do with Ronda Rousey. She does not want to fight Ronda Rousey."

That was UFC president Dana White talking a few weeks ago on the fight promotion's weekly show on Fuel TV, his appearance ostensibly to hype the first women's bout in company history. But his bitter words were not aimed at Liz Carmouche, who'll make history along with Rousey in the main event of UFC 157 on Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif. No, White was trash talking Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, whom he'd like us to believe is afraid of his women's champion.

But Santos isn't the one running scared. The UFC is.

click the link for much more....not a terrible article. Some decent common sense points that Dana/zuffa probably will not love.

Your probably should have used the title of the article itself rather than editorializing it to fit your agenda.  By changing the title from 'White, UFC still nixing chance of Rousey-Cyborg duel' to 'Dana White avoiding Rousey/Cyborg', you have probably doomed this thread.

As far as the content of the article itself, I agree whole-heartedly with his last paragraph.

"A Ronda-Cris showdown would be a big-money fight, no question, but how do you capitalize on it in the long-term if you get the result you fear? At this point, trying to build the women's game on the brawny shoulders of Cris Santos would seem to be a walk down a dark alleyway. If down the road it becomes unavoidable for the paths of Rousey and Santos to meet, so be it. But the UFC isn't going to go there until it has no other options."

thanks for the tip. I'll change if i can figure out how......

Can't change title after 5 minutes, i guess. but I don't think my title inaccurately portrays the article at all anyways.

Good read. It is always funny when Dana says "Ronda is the champ, cyborg is the one running scared." She didnt even fight anyone to get the belt and shell be fed cans until everyone looses interest.

wow, open disrespect for carmouche

I'm bored with Cyborg.

She has yet to prove she can beat ANY competitor without steroids coursing through her veins.

I do not think she can beat Rousey in the only womens weight class in the UFC, which is 135.

Cyborg REFUSED TO EVEN TRY to make 135. Was handed Dolce on a silver platter (probably any Doc she wanted to oversee, test, and monitor the weight drop). Dolce said he could get her there, healthy and strong. Let me repeat: Cyborg refused to even try.

There are tons more competitive women at 135 than there are at 145.

Cyborg created her own situation. Just one (1) loss without her precious "juice" and she fades into complete irrelevancy.

The post title is accurate as that's exactly what the article is suggesting.

A good read and it does make valid points, specifically Dana's contention that a "catch weight" fight makes no sense. B.S.
Not only is a fight between Rousey-Cyborg (title, no title, catch weight, whatever) what WMMA fans want to see, but he's a hypocrite as well: If GSP agreed to fight Anderson at 177 he'd make the fight in a second and it would be the most anticipated fight in UFC history. The fact no title would be on the line would be irrelevant.

Why would anyone think Cyborg would win? Her attempted takedowns on Gina ended up with GIna in mount on two separate occasions. Ronda would likely ragdoll her to the ground and have her way with Cyborg there.

How is DFW securing the services of Mike Dolce for Cris Cyborg and providing the unprecendented right to sign with the UFC but fight for another promotion (Invicta) being scared? I am not trying to make a rhetorical argument, am just genuinely baffled that someone could look at what the UFC has done and come to the conclusion that they are scared.

that's a good point. I think the ufc wants this fight, but maybe does not want it right now. Get Ronda and cyborg 2 or 3 fights each in the public eye, and then it makes more sense for them.

Even with Dolce in the picture, I don't think this fight was ever gonna happen "right now"

Do you really not see why they wouldnt want to do that for the first fight and why its not even close to the same thing as Silva/GSP.

First LHW/MW/WW are divs in the UFC, if GSP lost at 177 he goes back to WW, Silva back to MW, UFC doesnt have a 140 or 140 div for Cyborg.

If she wins at 140 pounds what do you do with her? Thats the reason, pretty obvious reason why they wouldnt do that fight at 140 as the first fight.

It makes no sense thats why.

stupid article

That is how I see it as well.

They want to put it off until Rousey can establish herself and the 135 pound division with UFC fans, and until Cyborg can rehab her image with a couple of big wins in Invicta.

I think Wagenheim is dead-on when he said the UFC could work with Carmouche beating Rousey by selling her Marine background and her status as the first openly gay athlete in the UFC, but that there is NOTHING for them to work with if Cyborg beats Rousey.  It would be a gigantic risk to make that fight right now.  Better to put it off until the women have established themselves with the UFC fanbase and Cyborg has put more distance between herself and the steroid scandal.

Of course the UFC doesn't want this fight. I would've thought this was obvious. Phone Post

Kirik-

Have to say I disagree with you up to a point. This author makes some good points:

-We are beginning to see Dana use the championship belt as somewhat of a 'prop.' For Dana to say that a Ronda/Cyborg fight 'does not make sense' at 140 because it would not be for the title is ridiculous. What? The UFC/MMA fanbase would not want to see the fight because it is for the belt? Please

-Ronda is the total meal-train ticket for the women's division in the UFC. Almost 100% of the marketing is targeted towards what she brings to the table. Like the author says, to risk losing that meal ticket of the women's divison due to a steroid-checkered Brazilian beating her up is not an inviting prospect.

Cyborg is not a sanctioned WMMA fighter, UFC events are sanctioned, why is this conversation even occuring?

Until Cyborg gets sanctioned by a major commision, this is comedy.

Of course fans want to see the fight at 140, I do not recall DW ever saying "well fans want to see the fight at 135, fans don't want to see the fight at 140 because I mean, that's 5 lbs heavier so fuck that."

What he's saying is that if Cyborg only agrees to fight at 140, there is no 140 lbs or 145 lbs division, so Cyborg literally fights Ronda then leaves UFC, win or lose. That's just stupid.

Lol I read just a bit of the article, and realised how fucking stupid it is. The reason the fight with Cyborg can't happen is it'd be a catch weight for a non title fight. How the fuck the stupid "journalist" came to the comparison between that and JJ's fights which are title fights is hilarious. Talk about having a bone to pick. Chael Sonnen can fight at 205, Cyborg can't fight at 135, there is zero comparison. What a fucking twat.
