I’ve mostly seen Jon Jones throw them but I don’t watch MMA as often as I used to. Should they be banned from MMA? Some say they are just for causing injury.
I don't think they should be they're a good tool but also if you time a side kick and circle with footwork you can counter. Just the evolution of striking. Same as calf kicks.
Of course it’s for causing injury, it’s a fight!
Should they ban anything that is intended to cause injury and just have them stand in the octagon looking at each other like Izzy vs Yoel?
Adensanya had a good response for that knee stomp. he pulled the leg back and high kicked Whittaker in the face
I'm indifferent personally. I can see the argument both ways.
For a long time I thought the move was BS because it was described in TMA circles as very easy to land and very damaging when it does. Yet historically it’s been used very little through MMA history.
Recently it’s been catching on and the injury list is growing. It has strengths and weaknesses but it definitely seems effective.
What sports are they legal in and have they experienced a large amount of catastrophic leg injuries?
The worst injuries I can recall in MMA have been Anderson and Corey Hill breaking their legs getting their kicks checked. I have heard no rallying cry to ban the kick or the counter.
Like many new techniques, they cause injury until you learn the counter. Grappling tournaments before people learned to spin out a heel hook were insane.

There have been a few guys who have had knee surgery and cited this move as the reason.
Whittaker against Yoel, Wonderboy in one of his fights, Till I think and Rampage after his fight against Jones.
It’s pretty much banned in all forms of kickboxing and North American Muay Thai. I’m not sure if it’s banned in Muay Thai in Thailand, they might have an unspoken gentleman’s agreement not to do it.
I’m not saying it should be banned but we can’t really say "it’s been around forever and never really caused any injuries" because MMA is one of the only combat sports to allow it.
I think it is legal in Savate.
