I stopped grappling many years ago, I had taken a very soft bump while training and it led to a constant nagging pain that lasted several months. Freaked me out, I grew up with a Dad who had chronic back pain, and I don't wanna live my life like that.
I had a few incidents while younger where I'd hurt my back a little bit. But. a year and a half ago I threw my back out simply by bending over, hurt like a bitch. Not sure what caused it, I was doing light weightlifting at that time and I'm pretty good with form imo.
Got to feeling pretty good, and started working out again. Nothing major, but my back tends to get very stiff after which leads to me cracking it on my own a lot to relieve pressure/slight pain. Seems I have some mild sensation going down my right leg as well, and this numbing pain in my lower back when I walk at times.
I wanted to get back to training MMA so made an appt with a sports Dr. He got me down to my underwear and noticed right away I look shifted to the right side. He thinks I have a slipped disc, will be getting an MRI in several mos (I'm in Canada, shit takes time!).
So just wondering should I quit any weight lifting in the meantime? Should I take up Yoga? Is MMA or boxing no go's for me now? I'm pretty disappointed by this I want to train, but I don't want to live my life in pain.
Sorry meant to put this on the OG.
My doctor recently told me I have a slipped disk, his exact words were "I think you have a slipped disk but there's nothing I can do for you" and advised me to go and see a chiropractor. However that's £40/hour, I can't afford that right now. I think my doctor is wrong, he diagnosed me without any check up, just listened to my symptoms. So I'll check back on this thread for your updates. There was no sudden "oh fuck my back" moment for me, it seemed to come on gradually.
What is your pain currently like? I have had the same back pain for a year now. I trained BJJ in Thailand for 3 months and in my final week I had to tap when someone got side control because any weight on my chest while I'm on my back was so painful I couldn't breathe. I'm planning to go back to Thailand in the next few months so I need to get it sorted by then. I havent trained for about 13 months now, but the pain is still the same.
FRAT: Keep me updated please :-).
I had a slipped disk for a year where my left arm would occasionally go numb, etc. I was doing military press at the gym one day and "reinjured" my back. In actuality it seems the disk slipped back in and I could not be happier. I'm sure that's not recommended practice but it seems the disks can manually be shoved back in... somehow. Haha, not sure if this helps.

When I went to physio the physiotherapist did mention that by doing the exercises you can unslip the disc to a certain extent. I don't think you need to go to physio, a lot of the exercises you can do on your own. That's why I'm considering Yoga, a lot of the excercises seem pretty similar to physio exercises. I remember watching the last season of TUF enough, Trish Stratus mentioned Yoga helping with her back.
As for my pain, right now I feel a slight tinge in my lower back. I can feel how it's slipped to the right basically. Not so much painful as it is annoying and uncomfortable.
Honestly I think if someone pushed it into place hard enough you'd be sore for a few days then it should get better. I mean it naturally "wants" to be aligned. It's just that there are too many things that could go wrong that this is not recommended...
With that said I have not done military press or weighted pullups since it slipped back in place since those exercises cause me issues.
