small debate with a friend

i know theres probably threads like this all the time but im wondering if anybody has any thoughts.. I saw passion last night with some buddies of mine. before we went to the movie we got to talking about the bible and he said something about how he believes the new testament but doesnt believe the old testament.. he said that in the old testament it says the world is flat, the earth is the center of the univers, I told him to find where it said those things (not saying it doesnt) and he couldnt (not to my surprise, its a big book).

but he pointed out that genesis 1:6 says and god said, 'let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it seperate the waters from the waters.' so god made the dome and seperated the waters that were under the dome fromt he waters that were above the dome. god called the dome sky." my buddy said the bible is saying theres a glass dome around the earth. I said i didnt think it necessarily said that, but didnt understand what it was trying to say. im wondering if anybody has ever read into this quote here and has any ideas as to what it might mean??

btw- did i make a thread about jesus being whipped like 60 times in "passion" late last night?? i dont remember but i see it in the "mythread" section and it says it was deleted. any mods know what happened in that threaD? thanks

JPS translation:

1:6 And God said: 'Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters'.

1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.
