Smelly Gi

Hey, what is the best way to cure your Gi of that smell it can sometimes get...I have heard to soak it in Coke, Oxy Clean, Vinegar, etc.

I wash it after each use, I think it just takes so damn long to Hang Dry that it can get mildewy.

Any suggestions for regular care that will keep the smells away?

Cheers

Put it in the washer and soak it in half a gallon of vinegar for a couple of hours.  Put enough water in the washer to cover the gi and poor the vinegar in.  It will work as long as the gi funk has not set in.

Donate the gi to people in the slums of Brazil and buy a new one Phone Post

i challenge you to be selfless.

Me too

I am the poor kid!!!!!!!!

I dry my Gi in the dryer 90% of the time because it takes to long to hang dry but I do find that when I hang dry it does tend to have a lingering b.o. smell but when I put it in the dryer it comes out smelling like flowers

Yeah, I'd rather tumble dry and deal with increased wear and tear, than having to juggle multiple gi's and dealing with hang-drying is a pain.

I come home, first thing I do is throw the thing in the wash, go eat something, throw it in the dryer, stuff it in my bag in the morning on the way out. Good to go. Way less hassle, and on low heat the shrinkage isn't really a factor it appears.

Yeah I dry full blast high heat after every class I train 4 times a week in Gi honestly I've had my Koral Gi for 2 years and theres no wear and tear from drying it also only shrunk the amount you would expect any Gi to shrink.

I also dont like the way it feels after I hang dry it. Its all rough and stiff.

Soak it in Coke...?

WTF?!?!

LOL.

(Wait, I wasn't the one who gave you that advice was I?)

Soak it in Coke

Ummm yeah you did

Blue Sparkle Snuggle drier sheets, and tumble dry low heat. Dries it enough to reduce hang time without shrinking. People will also compliment you on the lovely smell.

I just hang dry it. No problems for me. Phone Post

agree

 Buy a new one!

SPARTAN Fight Gear -  Buy a new one!

I already have a Spartan Gi (and a pair of Achillies Shorts)...it's great, actually the best Gi I have ever owned (shameless plug, but extremely true).

It is my back up that is the issue...and as an update, I washed it with vinegar and my regular soap...seems to have cured the problem...vinegar works good, soak it in the vinegar and water for about 30 minutes or so and then wash as you normally would...worked great for me

or

BUY A NEW SPARTAN!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers

All my gis stink. I have no problem with it.

Throw a cap full or two of Pine Sol in, helps a ton. We also use liquid Lysol.

I have a black koral light that caught 'da funk from someone

I would wash it and would smell fine..when it wet with sweat..'da funk

I love the gi, so I went to town

-Soaked in tub OVERNIGHT with a gallon of white vinegar...just let it sit.

-threw in freezer damp for hours (figured it could not hurt)

-then I washed it BY ITSELF about three times in a row. first time with a lot of soap (almost too much)..cold water as it fits snug as it is.

Dont know which part of equation worked...but its fine now

do this and then donate it.

Gis are training gear. I buy cheap white ones I can bleach when I need to and I get them big enough so I can tumble dry them and not worry about shrinkage. If you want a good looking gi for competition then buy one and only use it then. Its better anyway to train with flimsy collars and easy to grab material, then compete with a a gi that has a strong collar and harder to grab material.

The most common cause of funk is not washing immediately. If you cant wash the gi ASAP after training, then at least take it out of your gym bag and let it air dry. Leaving it in a gym bag while soaked with sweat is a perfect recipe for funk. Once I left my gym bag with a sweaty gi in a car trunk over night in summer. When I took it out the smell it was almost like a tear gas.

Gain with Fabreeze is a really good detergent for washing workout stuff.
