Seems fine, but the guy doing the can opener isn’t stacking the guy on the bottom. I love to stack, not necessarily trying to finish with the can opener but rather get the guy on the bottom to release his legs off me. Stacking allows me to put more weight thus pinning the guy on the bottom further and it also allows me to put further pressure and pain on his chest and ribs. More than anything, you’ve got to cause pain! the more the better, that is an essential key to many of the Catch subs and pinning.
The Can opener with a Stack?!?! You catch guys are always so mean! I don’t get it. It’s like you’re talking about fighting or something. Lol!
-I hope it’s very obvious that I’m joking bud-
Mileage may vary for people using this technique vs the version of Can Opener your talking about. Some people will be able to perform it and get to more of a elevator sweep kind of positioning (as opposed to the over Hook Open Guard) and others will have to tap because they are at the end of their range of motion at the spine/neck. At some point I feel like, the further and further we let people go with an attack before we begin to defend we have to accept that we have to tap. At least until someone else give us a heads up or we figure out another way.
Do you have any escapes you like to do from that version of the Can Opener, bud?
the easy way is to let the guard go and sit up

that's true, but some people get stuck with that when the opponent is squating and jamming your hips..as I think ReneH was suggesting with the stacking.... You need to sit up but do it by scooting your ass back rather than just trying to sit up in place.

Yup! That’s a nice one. Thanks bud!

That detail of scooting your butt back away from them was probably the most impactful detail to my direct attempts at Kimuras and Guillotines Attacks in Guard. Nice detail here as well. Thanks Meatgrinder!
