Someone please tell me what is happening when...

I finally started training again after about a 10 year hiatus.  And on the FIRST DAMN DAY the same thing happened that happened 10 years ago.

I'm on my back and someone has mount.  They put their weight on my chest, going for an armbar, and "POP," something like one of my ribs makes a popping sound.  I'm breathless for about 10 seconds and then for a few weeks after it happens, there is a sharp pain in the area when I flex my abdominals or the muscles in that area.

WTF happened?  I'd like to know so at least if/when it happens again I can say, "yea, I just pulled a muscle," or "yea, I just dislocated a rib temporarily, no biggie."  But I don't know what's going on.

Thank you in advance.

I had my labia excised in the 80's

You got bust.

where you're ribs connect is technically a joint, and can be "sprained".

I would suggest having your ribs removed. It will also enable you to fellate yourself (per my cousin Ricky).

Tell Ricky that Sniffy says hi.

 seperated rib

That was just your cherry poppin, yo!

are you super skinny or something? bummer

 I AM skinny.

I researched it online and I believe GladiatorCannon caught the correct on this one.

I'm pretty sure I sprained/tore the cartilage where the rib meets the sternum.  Unfortunately, I think I just may have a natural propensity to do this.  I was really excited about training again, and now I have to let this heal for a few weeks.  Apparently, this area is not very vascular, so healing is slow (it jibes with what I've experienced in the past too).  I'm going to take glucosamine to try to speed up the healing process.

Fucking sucks.  Thanks for your responses.

Sounds like a costal separation. It happened to me a few years back; it hurt to even breathe.

I was out of training for about 6 weeks...

LOL

Thanks for your responses.  After a little research on the internet, I think that I've identified the approximate areas that I've injured.  1997 and the latest 2009 were from grappling while 2007 was work-related.  If anyone has any info on nutrition and/or exercise that would prevent future costal injuries, please let me know.  I'm 42 and I want to continue training Jiu-Jitsu, but if I'm fucked due to a natural propensity for this type of injury, I guess I'd like to face it head on.  Anyway, thanks guys.

+ 1 except I was out 8 weeks.   Supposedly it's not something you're supposed just push through.  You have to let it heal completely or it will never heal correctly.

Your 2009 injury is exactly what I have. I was showing some white belts the mount escape where you roll and stick your feet in their arm pits and roll. I told them it was something i could never pull off but I had seen people do it so they should know it is there and to just relax. So one of them does the "but what if I do this" and drops all his weight on me. Huge crunching noise and sharp pain. Done. Out for 2 months. I can still feel it if I do a lot of explosive twisting moves. Asshole. Anyway the advice I got was that i should work it slowly on a swiss ball after it heals and try to strenghen it. Some stretching and massage helped me as well. See a Sports injury doctor or Chiropractor. A normal doctor will tell you to never do BJJ again and rest.
I was also told that it is a common injury for grapplers.

you popped a rib, aka costochondral separation.

Frank Shamrock had to fight Nick Diaz with like 20 of those.
