South Coreans demand apologies from USA

South Koreans protest after Trump says peninsula was once China’s

Gaffe came as US president recounted comments made during summit with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping

Buffeted by the currents of diplomacy, South Korea is sometimes described as a “shrimp between two whales” and US President Donald Trump has touched nerves with remarks that the peninsula “used to be part of China”.

The comments came after Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping at his Mar-a-Lago retreat in Florida.

As the pair discussed ways to curb North Korea’s nuclear ambitions amid mounting tensions, Trump told The Wall Street Journal that Xi went into the history of China and Korea.

“And you know, you’re talking about thousands of years ... and many wars. And Korea actually used to be a part of China,” Trump went on.

Beijing is Pyongyang’s sole major ally and Washington wants it to do more about the North’s nuclear and missile programmes, while the US has a security alliance with Seoul and stations more than 28,000 troops in South to defend it.

The exact details of what Xi said and whether Trump accurately represented him are not known, but South Koreans are wary of Chinese expansionism and politicians, historians and citizens have been outraged.

He should keep a slipper in his mouth so that he can spend the majority of his time comfortable.

Comfortably. Fuck autocorrect.

America is the only reason they're not Chinese now. They should show some respect.

They were part of China in the 1600's by Manchus , so he is right

Right or wrong. Don't say stupid unnecessary shit.

FloppyBBC Divac - Right or wrong. Don't say stupid unnecessary shit.

I think the problem was he failed to realize how incredibly nationalist the Koreans are and how they dislike acknowledging parts of their history if it doesn't cast the best light.

That and someone needs to take his twitter account away.

Bovine Defenestration - Comfortably. Fuck autocorrect.

Oh the ironing

i don't see this as any different than clinton apologizing for the crusades. most recent pres have been extremely historically ignorant.

Manchu weren't Han Chinese though.

China(Ming empire) was conquered along with Mongolia, Tibet, East Turkestan(Xinjiang) and parts of Korea by the Manchu horse tribes.

So during the Qing Empire, Chinese were a subjugated people along with Koreans, and Tibetans.

Trump also said he was sending an armada to defend them...with no ships scheduled to go.

The USS Carl Vinson was in Australia.

Hardly. "Spend" is a verb. "Comfortable" is an adjective. I needed an adverb.

aside from the fact that you are accurate about the composition, that wasn't in the 1600's.

Korea was a tributary state of the Manchus, but they were not a directly a part of their Empire. Korea remained independent.

^correct.

Don't let facts get in the way. Just be outraged

It's not about feigned outrage you mouth breather, it's about diplomatic faux pas. He was also technically right that Taiwan is its own country with its own national identity and leader, but that was fucking moot point to the issue and criticisms levied at him.

I meant it was when the Manchu started their conquest.

The last true Chinese empire was the Ming dynasty.

The largest territorial conquests that occurred in the name of the Chinese empire happened under the Mongol(Yuan) and Manchu(Qing), both foreign barbarian people.
