Wear shoes with some aggressive tread if you have them and stay away from any cotton clothes. The main thing is get out there and have fun OCR's are a blast and you'll meet some great people along the way. If you have any specific questions let me know, I do a ton of these races.

There will be some folks going for time, if possible(can be tough on single track trails) move over and let them pass on the left if they come up on you. They'll probably say on your left as they roll up.

The vast majority of folks at these races are awesome but there is always a dick or two somewhere thrown in for good measure.

At the end of every race, its the highlight of the day.

Hell at the BattleFrog in Pittsburgh there was a gaggle of people that had lawn chairs set up directly in front of the showers watching people. It was sort of odd. Me and a couple of other folks made sure that they got there fair share of spray from the hoses.

How hard is one of these if you're not doing it competitively? I'm in pretty good shape, and I was pretty good at obstacle courses in the army. Does a guy gotta train for this? Is it just jogging and climbing shit? Phone Post 3.0

If your in decent shape and not running for time it's not bad at all. A muddy course can make obstacles such as rope climb, multi rig and z wall etc more challenging once they get covered in mud.

Spartans are more of a grueling mental race that uses terrain and carrying heavy shit to break you down especially in the ski resort locales. Races like Savage and BattleFrog are more of obstacle focused upper body strength races. The platinum rigs at BattleFrogs are awesome.

There are people of all fitness levels in the open heats. If you want to run competitively then training is a must. There are some straight up studs that run elite. I run around top 3 to 5% in open and around 35% overall in elite on average. The top few hundred in open are pretty competitive, got a lot of people trying to qualify for worlds.

Thanks Willie. I'm running this with my wife and coworkers for fun. I plan to do the longer one in January with a coworker who is fit. Phone Post 3.0

Get out there and enjoy it man it's a helluva experience. I signed up for my first one to have some extra motivation to hit the trails for cardio days and got hooked.

I'm flying out to San Diego at the end of Jan for a BattleFrog.
