Sports Card thread?

Does one exist? How many OGers are collecting? Why is this hobby so fucking insane?

while hunting for Cobra Island troopers back in July, I came across a young gentlemen who turned me back on to baseball cards. We were the only people in line and questioned each other about what we were hunting. I had no idea or interest in sports cards, so he smartened me up. He left me a blaster and some hangers and cleaned out the rest of the inventory, topps chrome 2020. I only grabbed the blaster, not realizing that I wasn’t supposed to open it because they were flipping for 2x on eBay. But o did open, now I’m hooked, and I can’t find cards anywhere for retail.

So…who else is doing this?

In. I recently decided to start a sealed box collection. But I may open a hanger box or two if I come across any at msrp.

Try to get a Topps Montgomery Club membership in November when they open it up again. It was $300 for a new membership for 2021 but well worth it. First shot at online exclusives like UEFA Sapphire that was $80 msrp and sell for over $800 now.

I stopped collecting in the early 90s, so there’s all sorts of new lingo that I’m unfamiliar with. For example, Panini used to just be sticker books and now it’s the premier brand. What is this Topp’s club?

How do you feel about the current market?

The best benefit IMO is the ability to pre-order Topps' online exclusive offerings before they are available to the general public. The memberships do sell out fast, though.

Online exclusives are items such as Finest Flashbacks, Bowman Sapphire, Bowman Draft Sapphire, Topps Chrome Sapphire, etc. As long as Topps doesn't price them too high out of the gate you can easily sell them for nice profits.

I hAvent collected since the 90’s, but still have my collection

Who wants to but a mint Mike Greenwell rookie card?

I absolutely loathe it because it takes out the kids. Kids is what cards are all about. They got to learn about their favourite players and snuck in a lil math. Now, the regular cards are worthless. People only care about inserts. Graded cards have made adult collecting too cost prohibitive.

I started to get back into it, but I gave up on new stuff already. I'm focusing on vintage cards, mainly White Sox

I hear you. Action figures are approaching that due to the pandemic. I see people clearing out sections just to flip.
