Sports Card thread?

Doublevision -

I made this same thread a couple of weeks ago. I got into it during covid. I think I valued my collection at 10 grand at least. My Justin Herbert cards are going through the roof even without a grade

What Herbert's do you have??

Interesting...I have a few years of unopened MLB sets from around 30 years ago and a mishmash of cards going back to the 70s.  Wonder if they are worth anything

A few guys I work with are really into cards. They were going to send in some cards to PSA to be graded so I ask if I could sent in a few from my collection. One of the cards I sent is a 1993 Derek Jeter SP foil card. I didn't realize what I had until after we sent it in. Some of the Jeter PSA 10 graded cards have auctioned for over $150,000. I'm sure mine will grade out to be a 6 or 7 but the anticipation of getting the grade back is exciting.

I just started grading my comics. I guess it’s good that I have nothing worth grading card wise? Did you pay to get it pressed or anything? Can you get it pressed?

I literally did nothing to the card except take it my buddy. He looked at it and wiped it clean and sent it in. I'm not sure what else you are supposed to do before sending them in.

So with comics you can get your books cleaned and pressed, which usually leads to a highwr grade. the grading companies actually offer pressing services as well. Not sure if the same can be dond to cards.

I don’t know if pressing works for cards but watch out for trimmed cards. There’s legit detectives who have made long ass threads on the Blow Out forums over this. In comics it seems acceptable to alter your product for grading but not in the card world.

Something i learned a long time ago when trying to sell my baseball card collection, is that this stuff is only “worth” what someone is willing to pay for it, despite what the guide books and valuations are.

I have some top end stuff that I collected, Hank Aaron’s Topps Rookie, a Decent Mickey Mantle, tons of 70’s and 80’s stuff, rookie cards…but i couldn’t get dick for it about 20 years ago.

I haven’t tried since.

I did much better selling my Magic the Gathering collection, which i got 5 grand for.

In the last month, everything has changed. Someone said base cards aren’t worth anything, that was true a few years ago. I feel like when the 2018 Acuna and Soto update rookies got hot, suddenly base rookies were up even if they weren’t short printed.

Take a look at ufc. Base rookies that are 2, 5, 8 years old selling for hundreds. Conor, Khabib, adesanya, even Usman after his win the other night.

noticed yesterday those marvel cards from 1990 with the holograms, complete sets selling for $200 without the holos! With the Holos, several hundred more.

1990 score Bo, great, fun card, everybody loves that card! But even last year you could get it for a buck or two. Now this month it’s selling RAW for $20.

1990 fleer basketball sealed wax boxes? Pre covid $10. Today, well over $300. You can forget about 86-89 fleer basketball, gotta sell your car if you want to buy a few packs. 89 fleer basketball I passed up a set at a card show 2 months ago for $15, so last month I but the bullet and paid $25 for the same set. Wish I had bought both the guy had cause the last one just sold for $115 shipped.

My brother sold his bgs 8.0 Jordan rookie a little over a year ago for 3 grand. I begged him not to. Saw the other day they’re now selling for 20k.

some of these cards from 30 years ago are suddenly multiplying in value overnight? It’s absolutely nuts. Forget bitcoin.

recent sub .. bought these for $50 a piece 2 yrs ago

another part of the sub .. also picked 10 of these up for $30 a piece and 5 came back gems

Yeah that’s a big discussion in the comic community. Some people don’t consider pressing an alteration since the actual paper doesn’t have anything being removed or added to it. Others do. But trimming a card? Is that for those little loose edges you get sometimes?

VSMbaby9394 I dont post much there, mostly lurk to learn more about the hobby and to see all the cards I can't afford lol.

I have a few thousand cards from the late 80s into the 90s. Has their value changed recently?

Also if someone says a card is worth $100 is there someone out there ready to pay that?

Used to be big into collecting cards in the 90s and early 00s but have been seeing the popularity skyrocket again.

I live in a very rural area that doesn’t care much about pro sports, wonder if I could find any for sale at Walmart?

I’ve got thousands of cards, a lot of Jordan/Kobe/LeBron cards. Doubt they’re worth anything even though they were kept in plastic protectors.

I’ll look out for ya! That’s how I got turned on to Soto tho .. was lurking on BO and VintageTrader said he was all in on some kid named Soto so I looked up some vids and read some things and after his debut I was SOLD! So most of his stuff I got for penny’s on the dollar while everyone was on Acuña and Ohtani

Everything Kobe / Lebron is gold right now … also if you have a Walmart in a rural area you might just have a gold mine awaiting you … go check ASAP! Any prizm, mosaic or optic is gold also any soccer or any Topps chrome

Jordan/Kobe/Lebron are definitely money. And you should definitely check your Walmart, retail cards are the best!

Damn, gonna have to hit up Walmart soon!

None of my cards are graded, though.

Got about 28/32 of the cards still from this box. Some of them sell for a pretty penny, but only if they're graded. Got the whole box for less than $20 at Walmart right after he was drafted.
