SPORTS GEEK QUESTION OF THE DAY #16

SPORTS GEEK QUESTION OF THE DAY #16

NL & AL MVP winners

NL -

McCutcheon

Goldschmidt

Votto

Field

AL-

Davis

Miggie

Trout

Field

who would you vote for to win the MVP of each league AND WHY?

Huge Tigers fan, but I gotta go with Davis AL....and if the Pirates keep tearing shit up, McCutcheon.

Goldschmidt. He's a friend and damn good player.

I was telling people here about him 2 years ago. Glad he didn't make me a liar.

Cletus Redpecker III - Huge Tigers fan, but I gotta go with Davis AL....and if the Pirates keep tearing shit up, McCutcheon.

i might have to give it to miggie and cutch

i think miggie is haveing a slightly better all around year than davis

and cutch's defense is the difference between him and all the nl guys

Yeah me too.

Just didn't want to be a homer for once.

The guy on the verge of back to back triple crowns HAS to be the AL MVP.

And I don't watch enough baseball to know about the NL, so I'll say Puig.

MVP isn't "best player" though.

traditionally it is

it's most valuable player of the LEAGUE (NOT TEAM)

Trout and Kershaw Phone Post 3.0

I've always heard it described as "who is more valuable to their team?".

Migs had a bum hip and the Tigers kept on rolling.

Baltimore is good, but I can't see them being where they are (mired in the middle of the AL East) without Davis. I made a thread a while back about how much of a statistical anomaly Davis was. At the time, he was on pace for 200 hits and 200 K's. I understand he whiffs....a lot. But by the description that I have subscribed to, Davis has to win this.

"who is more valuable to their team?".

a few modern tv analysis have started voting that way.

like i said traditionally it goes to the best player in the league that season.

If MVP was best player Trout would have won last year. If it was about most value added Trout would have won last year. It is about who puts up the prettiest numbers. That said this year based on value to his team.

AL: Davis, Trout, Miggie in that order.

NL: McCutchen, Goldschmit, Field.

As I said it is about the prettiest numbers.

I'm 36 and have always understood it this way.

But that doesn't mean that the player who is, indeed, the most valuable to their team always wins.

Dog and pony show.

I'd vote for Trout in both leagues Phone Post

just came across this...seems there is an unofficial - official rules for voting - thi sis sent out to the bbwaa voters each year

Dear Voter:

There is no clear-cut definition of what Most Valuable means. It is up to the individual voter to decide who was the Most Valuable Player in each league to his team. The MVP need not come from a division winner or other playoff qualifier.

The rules of the voting remain the same as they were written on the first ballot in 1931:

1.  Actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense.

2.  Number of games played.

3.  General character, disposition, loyalty and effort.

4.  Former winners are eligible.

5.  Members of the committee may vote for more than one member of a team.

You are also urged to give serious consideration to all your selections, from 1 to 10. A 10th-place vote can influence the outcome of an election. You must fill in all 10 places on your ballot. Only regular-season performances are to be taken into consideration.

Keep in mind that all players are eligible for MVP, including pitchers and designated hitters.

see what i did there....

Btw lost in the fact that Cabrera and Davis are having great seasons is the fact that Trout has actually improved from last year. He has a higher WAR than each (already) and is on his way to back-to-back 10-WAR seasons...the only player that has done that since Willie Mays is Bonds. Phone Post

WAR is stupid...worst statistic in all sports

i'm not kidding it's 100% subjective and not based on any realm of reality.

andrew mccutcehon had a NEGATIVE Def WAR last season...that's friggin ridiculous by any reasonable thought
