For a leg workout if I do squats and deadlifts and calf raises will that hit the legs properly or is there a better exercise for hams than regular deadlifts?
I would not do heavy squats and heavy deadlifts in the same workout! It takes a big toll on the lower back doing both one after the other.
If you are keen to hit the hamstrings using deadlifts try doing Romanian deadlifts where the emphasis is on the hamstrings! and the lower back only plays a smaller stabilizing role in the movement. As opposed to the regular deadlift where the lower back plays a primary role in the lift.
ok, thanks
no better exercise for building power in the ham's than dead's 1st and squats 2nd. if you are going to work both in the same day like i do just because of time constraints go light on one and heavy on the other. ive been feeling pretty good doing 20r squats followed by a heavy deadlift
I might try that also. I am going to only be lifting for 2 days a week due to training for a triathlon. So I am trying to stick to very basic movements that will work the whole body together.
if youre training for a triathlon i would think high rep muscular endurace lifting would be a lot more beneficial than power training. but the squats and dead's will really help build up the glutes/ham's which is obviously very beneficial for a biker/runner
I believe that power training is crucial to all sports, even the enduranced based ones.
A brief explanation: Training for maximum strength enables the body to activate more muscle fibers during the propulsion phase, thus generating more force per stride. This in turn results in more distance covered in less time.

How well does weights training transfer into jogging though? Specificity studies tend to indicate not very well at all.
