Statement From Carlos Condit Regarding UFC 137 Fight Cancellation

October 18, 2011

On Tuesday, October 18 it was announced that UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre will be unable to participate in his UFC 137 title bout against top contender Carlos Condit due to an injury.Condit will not fight fight on the UFC 137 card and will be the first opponent for St-Pierre when he is healthy.

Statement From Carlos Condit Regarding Fight Cancellation:

“I am greatly disappointed, for both myself and UFC fans, that I will no longer be fighting for the Welterweight title at UFC 137, but I also understand that injuries are a part of this business.

As a professional fighter, it is my job to be prepared for any and all circumstances, positive and negative, that come my way during training and the actual fight. Georges is a great competitor and I know that he will want to return to 100 percent health as soon as possible so that this fight can be rescheduled.

This is the best training camp I have ever had, and I look forward to carrying over the growth that I’ve experienced in this camp to my next one.

I have trained for over a decade in mixed martial arts with the clear goal of becoming the best fighter in the world at my weight class. I have worked this long to become the UFC Welterweight Champion.  I will work a little longer.”

Statement from Malki Kawa, Condit’s Agent/First Round Management CEO

“Carlos Condit is the top contender in the UFC’s Welterweight division, and as such, the most logical decision for him is to be ready for the title shot he has earned against Georges St-Pierre as soon as St-Pierre is fully recovered.

While it is disappointing that he will not fight on the UFC 137 card, it is my hope that fans understand that this is the best matchup at this weight class. Carlos is hungry for the title shot and when this fight is rescheduled, he will be ready to show the world what made him the top contender.”

classy statement by Condit.. as expected.

I'm sorry, but he 'earned' that title shot via Nick Diaz not showing up to a press conference. I think Condit should stay active

The only thing that is kind of messed up is that he was given a title shot not on merit but on Diaz screwing up.

If they asked him to fight someone he should take the fight. Phone Post

I think that if this was going to be a long term injury, Condit would take another fight. This is the opportunity of a lifetime though, I think its worth waiting a few months for.

No, he 'earned' it by beating Ellenberger, stopping Rory, KOing Hardy, and kneeing DHK in the face.

Don't discredit Condit. He's earned that match as much as Diaz.

You guys are right for sure, if they announced the Condit was going to get a title shot after his last fight there wouldn't be any doubt he was the #1 contender.

But this time he sort of lucked out. Diaz screwed up and Carlos was the obvious solution. Phone Post

To those that say Condit didn't earn the title shot, how did Diaz earn his?

He earned it by beating contenders in the UFC, something Nick Diaz has never managed to do.

Agreeable.

I wonder if Malki Kawa was the first outside of GSP's camp to find out about this injury :)

FRAT warning. I respect Condit's decision, but let me play Devils Advocate for a sec. Dos Santos has fought , just to be active, this whole time. Diaz and BJ, if asked, would go 5 rnds, even if they've trained for 3. Koschek would accept the fight on grossly short notice ( even tho it's a good style match up for him, and money ), it still makes a statement. Tito fought Rashad!! Condit got this Title shot because of Diaz's actions, not because he beat BJ. I respect his Decision, but if you're going to be the Champ, you need a mind set like " Fuck Koschek! I'll beat his ass!". Hell, Dominic Cruz just fought with a broken hand!!!!!!!!, You have to RESPECT the mentality. If ever Condit becomes Champ, fighting an unprepared Kos will be the least of his concerns.........just sayin'. Or, maybe Condit is hurt too, but it wasn't as serious as GSP's injury.

I'm doubting the ufc even wanted condit to fight someone else.

If diaz loses and condit lost to someone else, then what's there left for gsp anyway?

they need condit to bench incase diaz loses, or....well pulls a diaz. they sure aren't going to be giving bj a shot against gsp.

If they don't offer him a fight the point is mute.

If Comdit and Diaz lost you put BJ vs Kos.
(who I would assume they would offer to step in)

With no clear #1 Comtender they set up a little WW tournament which allows GSP time to fight Anderson. Phone Post

I don't give a fuck if Condit wants to wait around. If Diaz beats BJ, that should be his title shot. BJ has never lost to anyone that was not a current or future UFC champion. If Diaz wins, he should get that shot and if for some reason GSP isn't ready yet, Condit should fight Diaz for the shot. Tired of this BS about waiting around for a title shot.

^this

Diaz didnt earn shit, he is lucky to even be in the main event and bj is gunna send him to the prelims or maybe even back to strikeforce......homies!!! Phone Post
