staying sharp during hiatus...

I'm taking a break from training because of work obligations. I'm wondering how I can keep my skills sharp.

what are some things that you guys do when you are forced to take time off from training?

I'm thinking instructionals and a training dummy. any other hints?

You will lose your cardio since I don't think there is any substitute for grappling other than...well..grappling. Perhaps swimming is a good alternative until you hit the mat.

Watch all of the tapes/instructionals you can get your hands on during your hiatus.

I usually eat a lot of icecream sandwiches, play online multiplayer games, and nap a lot to stay sharp.

When I'm really motivated I will watch a whole season of the Saprano's in one sitting. Usually polishing off a box of Klondike bars while doing so.

To keep my timing, I usually will do jumping jacks while taking a piss, doing my best not to miss.
This also knocks out two birds with one stone becuase the jumping jacks are my cardio for the day.

For strength training I will only use one finger to open my pepsi and two fingers to open my bag of potato chips.

For my power training I usually change my cloths on Wednesdays and take a shower.

On a more serious note.

I would still attempt to roll once a week regardless of your commitments. Nothing replaces mat time.

Running is the king of cardio. I fkn hate running, tried everything else, but in the end running works the best for me.

Lifting augments everything. One body part per day, 3 different exercises per body part.

Or full body workouts every other day, high rep, low weight. You can alternate these routines every 6 weeks.

Stretch. Stretch twice a day. It will help cut down on the injuries when you come back.

I don't think instructionals are best during a layoff.
You can't practice anything while your off. Then when you come back you are trying a bunch of sh*t that you don't really know, get frustrated and demoralized.

It's better to just watch competition footage like "on the mat" etc. to keep your brain working but not confusing it.

Two things you get unaccustomed to on lay offs. The weight on your body, and broken breathing patterns / smoothering. Don't really know what to do about that unless you hire a fat ass hooker...lol

If you're taking a 'hiatus' from training, why are you asking about places to train full time on the Canadian forum?

Won't you be too busy with your fightwear company?

What exactly is your story Pablos?

what the hell do you need to know my life story for?

yea, i'm thinking of starting my own fightwear company. after it gets started, i want to focus on training full-time, as i will have missed out on training.

...not that it has anything to do with this thread...

anyways, does anyone else have any tips?

Sounds kinda dumb, but I like to use alot of visualization stuff, even when I am regularly training. Really try to picture an opponent's moves and try to picture your counters.

It looks really silly, but get on the mats by yourself and imagine the opponent's moves and actually perform your counters, etc. (Kind of like kata). If you've been rolling for a while now, I'm sure you can remember the "feel" of it. If you can train yourself to actually feel the "flow" and move with it- it really does help. If someone walks in on you, it's pretty hard to explain what the heck you were doind rolling around on the floor by yourself, though.

Performing the drills with your mind imagining an opponent is better, in my humble opinion, than just mindlessly drilling elbow escapes (or whatever) one after the other. It helps program your "muscle memory" in a different way. Plus, you always get to win.

Again, might sound silly, but it works for me.

Think about BJJ a lot:)
I have missed a week from training and come back to mat better than I was last week because I developed some setups in my mind and thought some things clear and developed some strategies.

Still I don't think it will help that much if it is a LONG time off. I would advise to still get ONE roll a week. Come on... you have time for that...
