I'm not very good yet, got killed about halfway through the second sector. It seems like if you run into a more powerful ship you are just plain screwed lol.
You will get the hang of it. Do some runs on easy to start with. One hot tip from me. If you reach the mid game and manage to buy a teleporter, be very careful with it. Boarding the enemy ship with your favorite crew and then accidentally blowing it up with a missile is a classic mistake. Good luck.
Is starbound worth a buy? 
Bought Bioshock Infinite for 7.50$.
I got Metal Gear Rising, looking forwrd to playing it as I never played it on the other systems. I will also get either BGII or FFVIII if they go on sale
