Stop saying: "___ is good / bad for the sport"

That has to be one of the top overused and ridiculous comments on MMA/BJJ discussion boards.  Whenever anyone says something is good or bad for the sport, I chuckle to myself.

Let me tell you something:  It would be more accurate if you said the person / thing in question is irrelevant to the sport.

You make MMA and BJJ sound like second rate sandlot sports when every little thing is either good or bad for the sport.

In the world of professional sports (NFL, MLB, etc.) there are baseball fights, fans throwing batteries, etc.  They are mere flashes in the pan and no one gets their panties in a bunch about such things being bad for the sport.  Do you think people are worried whether fan-based NFL and MLB events, productions, websites, etc. are good or bad for the sport?  Of course not.

Are they fun?  Of course.

Do they make people money?  Sure do.

But stop this nonsense of labeling everything and/or every person as being either good or bad for the sport.  In reality, they are barely drops in the bucket.

Here are just a few LEGITIMATE examples of events that have been bad/good for certain sports:

1.  The baseball strike(s) were pretty bad for the sport of baseball, but the sport has rebounded.  On the other hand, Cal Ripken's consecutive game record was good for baseball.

2.  The NBA referree scandal with Tim Donaghy betting on games was bad for the sport of basketball, but it was not a deathblow.  Michael Jordan?  Great for the sport of basketball

3.  The various doping scandals of track and field were bad for the sport, but hasn't killed the sport.  Usain Bolt's world records?  Awesome.

Those are just a few examples.  There are about a zillion others no doubt, but these are MAJOR events.

Unless Dana White comes on here and makes some huge announcement, what happens on an internet discussion forum or an internet talkshow is irrelevant to the sport.  FACT.

If the UFC referees were bought off, THAT would be bad for the sport of MMA.

Anderson Silva?  Fantastic for the sport.

There are other examples, but there are relatively few people on their own who have the power to either be good or bad for the sport.

I have no doubt that many of you will misunderstand my point and conlcude that I am against grassroots based events, organizations, etc.

lol @ you if you do.

P.S.  This thread is GREAT for the sport.

This thread is bad for the sport.

JOB - This thread is bad for the sport.

you took the words right out of my mouth.

Frat

JOB - This thread is bad for the sport.

You beat me to it JOB.

People say things are good or bad for the sport because mma is still in its infancy. Even though you refer to these things as "flashes in the pan", something that is bad for the sport of mma at this stage of the game could ruin its credibility for years to come and might not be able to overcome. Baseball can rebound from a strike because it has been around for so long. Football and Basketball have also. MMA has only been around for less than 2 decades and only as popular as it is for maybe 5 years.

Telling people what to say is bad for the sport!!!!!!!

Amen

Why should we listen to a person who doesn't even realize carbonation is the defining characteristic of soda.

bismanfightclub - yes we don't need anyones opinions in these forums. Especially like the ones above. If you do not think that stuff like the plaxico burress shooting, or Mike Vick dogfighting doesn't give the NFL a blackeye you are the biggest fool of all.

First of all, where did I say those things were irrelevant?  I could not have listed every possible example or my post would have been 10,000 words.

Second, both the things you mentioned happened OFF THE FIELD and had NOTHING to do with the sport other than they involved people who play the sport.

lol @ you being unable to make the distinction.

In summary, you're a bigger fool than the biggest fool of all.

Sowwy guys! I wait at my keyboard ready to attack!

Please.  Save the drama for your mama.  First of all, please point to where I said it would be impossible for something to be good ro bad  for the sport?  My point was that this phrase is overused and is frequently applied to silly irrelevant issues.  Thus, you have failed to comprehend the clear point of my post.

Also, just to address the point you made (which was irrelevant to my point):  The things that happen now in its alleged infancy will be forgotten in 2 weeks.

You are a drama queen plain and simple.

excellent use of the P.S..  lol.

You make good points.  To expand upon it a bit:

The sport has gone mainstream and evolved well past the point where it was only a few years ago (2004) & certainly is lightyears beyond the "dark ages".  During those times, smaller scale issues were very "bad for the sport" because it was fighting for accpetance & profitability, and its naysayers had the upper hand.  The impact of an issue had the chance of becoming a multiple of the issue itself.

Nowadays, there is significant corporate involvement, mainstream media involvement, a large installed base, and loads of money involved in the industry.  While there is still room to grow the business, the industry is incredibly less sensitive to smaller scale issues (isolated issues on radio shows, poor judgement by "person X", almost anything that can happen on an internet messageboard, etc).

So I agree that there are only a few people and incidents that can have the power to be bad for the sport.

(p.s. Obviously a mid-teir player or above that institues a mid-90's style marketing/PR plan focused on spectacle instead of sport is bad for MMA, but that is outside the bounds of what my post is addressing.)

I would hardly call my post dramatic. Your thread coming down on using the term "bad for the sport" was much more drama queenish than my reply. Tapout even uses that phrase for their website. Stop getting your panties in a twist from the phrase.

 OG ?

I agree, saying things are bad for the sport is bad for the sport.

MMA is more popular than Boxing and it is in it's infancy?
It's is now a kind of stereotype but it is in it's infancy?

MMA was in its infancy when it was called NHB. Get the fuck outta here with that bullshit. When it was in it's infancy 75% of you fucknuts were chasing ass and getting shitfaced while the real fans of "MMA" were in gyms and ghetto Dojo's scattered across the country driving 13 hours on a friday night after work for a fight that will barely pay for gas. Then be back into work on Sunday morning

You don't get to say whats bad or good for the sport because you missed that part. Its NOW Fully mainstream, nowhere near in its infancy and you missed it. So cut the Bullshit you fake ass mutherfuckers and find something else to make you feel special and unique, get a mind of your own and stop quoting shit you see on this forum that's been said over and over and over for years and years weather it was appropriate or not, just to say it. Fuckin posers

Please stop telling other people what to not say.
