There is a Straight Blast Gym affilaite near me that offers a MMA style of JKD, Muay Thai, and Submission. Anyone know anything about these guys?
There's alot of JKD posers in this world there's a few in my state.
Those SBG guys in Georgia and NYC are for real.
The rest I dont know about.
If your still not sure. Here's a few questions to ask.
How many years have trained in JKD?
How many times a year do you visit your primary instructor?
How long did it take you to get your instructorship?(5 years and under is kinda questionable).
I'm a blue belt under Royce, but I've been out of the game for a couple of years, and I was looking for someone close to check out. I didn't know these guys were even in my area. Thanks for the info.
What part of the country are from?
Straight blast gym's are legit. Forrest Griffin, Rory Singer are members in Athens, Ga. If you can afford it...join. I would but it's a 5 hour drive there and back.
Check out the JKD forum here. A lot of SBG guys post there. I've seen some of SBG's video productions and they're all great. They seem to have a great attitude and philosophy towards training. I would assume if they have the SBG name, then it will be a good place to train.
I think gyms like straightblast are the future of martial arts. Intelligent realistic training for fighters and the average joe.
Bruce.
randy couture trained with all the guys at straight blast... shit, they got him ready for his first few fights.
How good is the Straight Blast Gym in NYC?
CHristian Montes just recived his purple belt (over due) and is a great coach and competitor.

Straight Blast is for real! So many JKD people are armchair warriors that think a good training day is to learn ump-teen million variations of a single technique andf never once try it with any form of resistence. I believe IMO if bruce were here he would look at those type of people and say..."they just dont get it"
Well the Blast Guys....they get it! All training is done to really focus on the goal of truley improving performance against a resisting opponent.
Such a simple idea.....but genius usually is.
Go Blast!
Oh and 100.00 is a bargin for a really really good training situation

I have their first video series and they are legit. Matt Thorton knows all of the endless JKD drills, he can run trap combinations all day long. It's really refreshing to see a guy like Matt who knows the JKD curriculum apply the concepts to actual fighting, instead of the crap JKD has become. All ranges of fighting are covered. The videos are very well produced, and Matt is a great instructor. The progression is wonderful. You simply can't go wrong adding the tapes to your collection and incorporating his stuff in your training curriculum. I would say of the many hundreds of MA tapes I own, Matt's are probably in the top five.
Of course the tapes that completely changed how I train and think about MA were the original Panther Brothers tapes featuring the Dog Brothers. I can thank them for the many, many injuries I've sustained over the years, but I also owe them incredible gratitude from moving away fromt the static JKD stick drills I become so go at to the real deal. Unfortunately it's very difficult to find people willing to train that hardcore, which is why there is only a small group of guys I train with like that here in Dallas.
Matt is also a black belt under the Machado's. SBG has a great program and are very selective of whom they let represent them.
"How good is the Straight Blast Gym in NYC?"
Good like beer. Christian is a great coach with a really clear and
effective teaching style. There is a lot of individual attention and the
classes are small to medium sized. Everyone who trains there regularly
is ego-free and friendly.
Check out www.roninathletics.com for more info.
"they use a lot of techniques that are effective if you are a big guy doing them."
not the case at all. i have students who are "lightweights" and under 140's. I, myself would compete at the 160lb range.(though i weigh slightly more now =p) but i also have students who are well over 200lbs and we all train, roll, and spar together. its the same with all the other SBG's i've been to, always a fun, safe, and ego-free environment. its also important to note that some of the more technically impressive guys I have met have been in the lighter weights proving that the techniques (curriculum) themselves are in no way dependent on size and strength.
Non-Attribute Based Training = realistic training for Every-Body
great people!
Anyone familiar w/ the SBG affiliate, One Dragon Martial Arts, school in Pembrooke Pines Florida ?? Is it still there ? I was there once and it was pretty good. Ego free, for the most part and fun, w/ good instruction. Is this school considered a SBG ?? Any info would be appreciated.
One Dragon Martial Arts is owned and operated by SBG Coach Luis Gutierrez. He is the East Coast Rep for the
Straight Blast Gym international. .
