Strikeforce to hold 8 MAN MW GP if Shields leaves

Didn't see anything posted on this.

I wrote an article last year crying for SF to do an 8-man MW tourney.  I think the tournament format is still a bit under-utilized, and their 185 lb class is pretty solid.

My first round match-ups:

Cung Le x Manhoef

Shamrock x Lindland

Mayhem x Jacare

Lawler x Henderson

Thoughts on this dribble?

that would be awesome. good matchups.

^will lawler still be in strikeforce? what about tim kennedy?

NICE MOVE

that would be so awesome if they really do this. VERY exciting.

 Auh, thank you sir.

The "wild cards" are Tim Kennedy and Rockhold, who are very solid but haven't  been pushed/promoted a lot, Nick Diaz, who should be game for MW if Shields leaves, and Babalu if he makes the drop to 185.

If I were Strikeforce, I'd count Le- Smith 2 as one of those tournament matches, and the recently passed Jacare- Villasenor as the other.

My tournament in this circumstance would be

Smith- Le
Jacare - Villasenor
Henderson - Manhoef
Mayhem- Lawler

Why cut the 8 man tournament in half though?

Hosting an 8-man will provide one entire show, and significant pieces of the next two.

"Cut in half" is a bad choice of words.  I just mean that they shouldn't individualize the fights, but rather promote the hell out of one huge GP event that would consist entirely of an 8 man MW GP.

Or, retrospectively, they could say Jacare earned his spot by beating Joey, and make Cung/Smith a qualifier match.

If Nick Diaz wants to move up to MW, he should be in the tournament. Hopefully he does because right now he's being wasted in a WW division filled with prospects and mid-level fighters.

 Sounds awesome to me :-)

i completely agree, i hope they do it that way

It would be fucking awesome if it were a pride style GP. Settle that shit in one night, son.

Actually, I disagree, and strongly.  I'm a tournament nut, but Shine Fights is setting up a WW GP that will take place in one night.

More tournament results have been blurred or generally fucked up by alternates/injuries.  The Bushido MW GP with Filho/Misaki/Kang is the perfect example, or the finals of the Sengoku FW tourney.

PoppinFresh - i think jacare stands the best chance of winning if this tournament happens.

he already had out of this world BJJ, but he has also improved his striking tremendously imo.

I'm kind of a Shields nuthugger, but I think Jacare is one of the worst match-ups for him in SF or anywhere else in MMA.

I also think this will be a secret motive for heading to the UFC.

shamrock is irrelevant to a 185 tourney....save him and his name as a title defense to build up the champ who wins the tourney.

include kennedy, lawler, manhoef, villasenor, jacare, cung le, scott smith and henderson.

1st round:

cung vs manhoef
kennedy vs villasenor
jacare vs smith
hendo vs lawler

Should be good fights, but really...it does feel 2nd tier compared to what the UFC has.

 LOL, how would it not?

That would be cool if it happens.

Do it the pride way 1st round on one show then semis and final on another

Cung le vs smith
miller vs jacare
manhoef vs lawlor
hendo vs shamrock or villasenor

1st 3 sre rematches that most people wanna see again

Trying to get fighters that don't have "former" or "lost to" written on their resume' would be a start. Jacare's the only guy who has a long future on their roster.
