I don't either. But it's solely because of the reason some coaches, teams, and gyms give them out. I just think you get promoted when you get promoted and you shouldn't need benchmarks or pats on the back to keep you training. I completley understand why they're used, from a business perspective, but beyond that I could care less about them.
I just got two stripes on my purple... My coach doesn't give anything away. So I know I definitely earned it. But I also know how far I have to go, so it doesn't mean a whole lot to me personally. My coach knows I'll only stop doing bjj when I'm no longer physically able. He even said, I know you hate them, but you're getting them tonight. Haha. But if we're realistic with ourselves about bjj, well admit it's a fringe sport that most people do recreational and don't think much about. The stripes keep them motivated and coming back.
Meant to say I won't stop training until I'm physically unable. So there's no need for him to give me stripes. But he did it anyway. Meaning you earned it, so shut the F up and take it.
I CANNOT take stripe discussions seriously.
I just can't.
They are not functional. Meaning, you're still in the same bracket in a tournament. They're usually just given to keep people motivated.
Anytime I hear someone say I'm a 3 stripe whateverwhatever, I tune out. It's like someone asking for extra street cred.

Caique gave me the first stripe on my white belt at 36. Still pretty damn proud of that even though I got flamed here.

How long had you been training under him?

Not long, just a blue belt.

Fuck that, if you've earned stripe, and can back if up, who cares what others think. Talk the talk and walk the waltz.

How exactly does one "backup" a stripe?
Are three stripe blue belts obligated to do well against two stripe blue belts so their instructor isn't accused of selling stripes?
Please explain it to me.
Shinsplint - Got my first 3 stripes after about 2 years, blue belt about a year later. We've got one 4 stripe white that's been training for about 5 years.
Jesus. I'm all for tough belt expectations but 5 years is a little excessive unless ed training once every few weeks
I don't like stripes but I do use them to stripe my students. They all know how I feel about them and how I view them and truth be told I actually use them more to remind me roughly how long they have been training more than an incentive for them. It's one of the only things in BJJ that I conformed to the majority about because it was too nit picky to argue against.
None of my students are the kind to brag about their stripes and if they did, I would probably remove them lol.

He's pretty regular, at least a couple times a week. The guy is only 4'11" at 155 pounds, he has to work hard for everything and is slowly developing a style that suits his body type. I think it was a matter of promotion timing more than anything though.

5 years isn't a timing issue lol
yeah, I can't argue with that.
I never had any stripes on white or blue. Think I got up to 3 on my purple and 2 on my brown. Stripes are pointless except for white belts.
Question for you old schoolers, were stripes always around? Or is that more of an American thing?
I think stripes are important at white. You kinda need that motivation. But by blue belt I think you should be setting your own goals and motivating yourself with training. That's just my opinion.
