Swimming question

Are the benefits of swimming a couple laps at about 80% equivalent to sprints? Kinda like "sprint swims"? I'm looking for something new to do for cardio and sprint intervals are great, but I recently aquired access to an indoor pool and am interested in starting to swim for fitness.

i'm no fitness expert but for me being in shape from swimming didn't translate into being in shape for say sparring. sprints and exercises like burpees and other conditioning stuff helped more with "fighting" endurance for me.

hope you can get some answers from the guys that really know as i would like to know as well.

I'm not really looking to get in fighting shape so much as losing bodyfat. I'm intrested in swimming because it offers a new challenge and is low impact.
