its butterfly guard with his back flat on the mat (usually a no-no). I don't know what the big deal was, but for awhile, the UFC announcers would always cream their shorts talking about the TK guard.
I think it's half guard with your outside leg hooked under his thigh like in the butterfly guard.
anybody for sure what it is i cant seem to find any tech reference on internet other than fight descriptions also since if this is a butterfly like guard does he use any sort of arm postion tie up to prevent gnp
It's butterfly guard with the back flat on the mat and no control. Maurice Smith used it against wrestlers like Coleman who didn't even try to pass it. He would use the legs to create space and try to stand up again. The UFC announcers thought it was the greatest thing ever for some reason. I'm sure TK used it more efficiently than Smith did. Smith much overhyped TK guard was exposed when Smith fought Renzo. Renzo blew through it and arm triangled Smith in about 1/2 a minute or so.
Yeah, this was years ago so at the time people were really jocking it. Looking back, the position wasn't done too well compared to the half guard games of today. TK was always flat on his back and I don't remember if he ever stressed fighting for the underhook.
green whale did he just use the butterfly hooks or a /2 guard with out leg hooked inside one of the descriptions i heard years ago is that he would use one hook in /2 guard so he could do arm and leg locks
also i hear mo smith connected to this position and think i saw frank use something like that on tito so is this something taught to japanese shoot fighters
guard flowchart
TK guard - butterfly - pinball - the london - spider -
DLR hook - scorpion - velvet X - (reverse) turtle - 'D'
any suggestions
GesaGatame,
He did have one hook in there that he would use to elevate guys and it would open up some leg lock opportunities for him. I've gotta go back and look at it again, but it wasn't exactly refined very well at the time.
gw is 'one hook' from the /2 guard or from butterfly
i also noticed that the guard smith used on coleman did not work well on randleman but bas was able to avoid much of randlemans gnp using if i rember the /2 guard so what guard is better for gnp
