So I guess Im taking my first break. I have been trainig for 2 years, and training 4-5 days a week this last year. I kind of just got burnt out and stopped going, I probley only went to train 3 times in febuary.
Whats the longest break you guys have ever took?
Im starting to worry because it has been a month and I still havn't gained the motivation to train....
Breaks will kill you. I started in 1996 in OH, trained 2-3x a week for 2 years straight. Got my blue belt.
Then moved to NC, trained 3-4 x a week (Muay thai and bjj/mma) for about a year, took 6 months off, then picked up where I left off. Still a blue belt, but winning a few no-gi tournaments here and there. Injuries impacted training for at least 3-4 months.
Then moved to CA in 2002, trained for about 2 years 2-3x per week, but mixed up a lot of wrestling and muay thai. Finally got my purple under Eddie Bravo after 3 yrs in CA.
Then I pretty much stopped training b/c of work and injuries. I'd attempt comebacks here and there, but my level has dropped quite low.
Now, lots of blue belts I competed with are black belts, and I'm just an avg blue belt IMO.
The point is- if you take long breaks, your skill level definitely drops.
I usually train 3-4x per week. I had to take a 7 month break for an overseas deployment. It really did hurt.
As a senior white belt at the time, it took a while to get back to the level I was at before my deployment. I finally reached Blue Belt and I continue to train 3-4x per week.
There is no doubt that I will have to take another long break at some point, so my motivation is to train as hard as I can while I am around.
I took a 10 minute break once between rolls to catch my breath and get a drink of water. Next thing I knew everyone else went up three belts! That's the last time a take a break!!
In all seriousness, I've taken a couple of loooong breaks where I had completely lost all interest in training, like more than a year long. I eventually got back into it either because a friend pushed me into it or because I was getting out of shape. In both cases I had to build up my cardio from scratch and I had to accept that I wasn't as good as I used to be. It was humbling and a pain to go through, but it happens.
My suggestion is to do something active to keep you in shape. That way it won't be as bad if/when you decide to start training again. Plus it's a good idea to stay in shape anyway :). Hang in there!
YOu need to keep your motivation and how else better than to x train. Training in BJJ/judo/mma is very difficult on your body. So why not xtrain. Take up Judo which will complement your BJJ. Learning the correct throwing teckniques is fun and challenging. Maybe add a yoga class and some core strength workouts at your favorite gym. This is what I do and I have both a BB in judo and 3 striped blue in BJJ.
