Has anybody used these?
How does Tanita's measurements compare to skin-fold / caliper measurements?
Thanks in advance for any insight.

Dunno bout the body fat one, but I'll vouche for Tanita. Wrestling teams and tournaments who were serious always used Tanita.
In order for it to work properly, you have to be properly hydrated. As far as I know, it programs Body Mass Index data since you are required to input your height before you weigh yourself. Basically, if you're short and have heavy muscle mass, you might not get an accurate body fat reading. It might give you a close ball park reading but the caliper is probably a lot more accurate.
Vitor - yeah, the weight precison seems to be very close to a doctor's scale.
subryan - unfortunately I'm short and have (relatively) high levels of muscle mass. So I'm probably a bad candidate for getting precision, based on your comments.
Although I must admit that I don't really understand why this is so (but I'll take your word on it). So, if I was short and muscular, would the Tanita give me a higher rading than caliper testing? Or lower?
Thanks guys. Any comments regarding consistency?
If I can find that the caliper testing is consistently, say, 3 percentage points off from the Tanita scale then at least I can use a that scale as a guideline...
Thanks again.
Even calipers have a +/- 3-5% error range when using them. Tanita products are top notch.
I have the Tanita Innerscan. It measures just about everything you can think of....weight, bf %, water %, bone mass, BMR, biological weight, visceral fat and a few other things.. I highly recommend it. It's proven to have been very accurate and consistent for me.
Thanks, LA.
The model I have is older so to be be honest, I couldn't speak for the current models. You might want look into the BMI issue further to see if it is fact or fiction.
I have a Tanita, and the weight is great. It's very, very consistant. The bf% and hydration % suck though. It'll have 2-5% variations from day to day (sometimes even from weigh in to weigh in, ie if I weigh in 2-3 times in a row).
Also, virtually all of the electronic bf% machines state that it's not for "athletes" due to the increased muscle mass.
If you're packing alot of muscle, it will assume your fat. Being short or tall doesn't make much difference since you input your height.
i have an old tanita.
may have to buy a new one with all the bells and whistles.
electrical impedance is more consistent than human caliper test.

The more hydrated the lower the reading. I would recommend drinking at least a gallon of water before stepping on one with a witness nearby.Good luck!
Thanks for all the comments, guys. I appreciate it.
