Does anyone have any experience with those tax relief companies that advertise negotiating with the IRS?
I fucked up a 2016 medical expense entry, got audited, now they won’t accept 2 years of vehicle mileage and say I owe $16k. Fuck the IRS!

I’m sure but who? What kind of lawyer represents individual taxpayers? I’m only finding corporate or business tax lawyers locally.
Look for a reputable CPA
Do NOT go through those companies.
Doesn’t it suck getting MAGA’d like that?
But im willing to bet that you did overstate deductions
How much of a mileage deduction are they disallowing for you to owe 16k?
Yes "fuck the irs", but gotta figure out if YOU took a crazy deduction you were not entitled to

Oh fuck you. the irs is and always has been fucked.
I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be posting the same in a few years when they get audited on their crypto trades.
I cant offer you a lawyer but I can send some anal ease to help you get through it.

I pay for the audit protection from TurboTax.
16,000 in taxes owed would be like a 60,000 dollar adjustment to your income or more depending on your overall level of income. mileage is about 53 cents a mile. did you claim over 100,000 miles in travel?
at any rate hire a cpa that specializes in tax or an ea whose career has specialized in tax advocacy.

Just a guess but the 16K they want probably includes significant penalties.

Your situation relates to business deductions no? So call a few up and if they won’t represent you, surely they can recommend someone.

Drove 28K and 34K miles in 2 years, the IRS agent threw out all of it because I only had mileage logs and oil change receipts, she wanted to see dealer documentation of odometer readings on cars I traded in months and years ago.
That $16K number includes penalties.

That’s the best path I see for now. Thanks!

he said it was 2016 and they "audited 2 years", so no older thean 2 or 3 years worth
still seems like a crazy amount of disallowed deductions
OP what was all this mileage for?
were you actually commuting to and from medical centers, hospitals, etc. for a health concern?
did you keep any sort of documentation at all regarding the mileage?

something seems missing. the irs tells you to use a mileage log if you take the mileage deduction. you mentioned oil change receipts. did you deduct those too? you can’t do mileage and actual maintenance/depreciation on a vehicle because that’s factored into the mileage expense.
