Taxi companies trying to block Uber in Toronto

They've done these rolling protests a few times in the last month. Doing another today.

They're also paying tons of money to city politicians (as 'campaign donations'). This will get interesting.

Fuck taxi companies.

Yeah I used uber quite a bit last year when I still lived in toronto, hopefully it stays. Phone Post 3.0

I stopped using normal taxis completely since they pulled the same extortionary shit in London Phone Post 3.0

Just wait until they stage another protest during teh pan ams.

Fucking chaos.

Glad I live far away from the downtown core.

just reading up on it, it seems that the cabbies have a point in that their companies have to a pay a licensing fee to the city and uber doesn't. maybe the problem could be resolved if uber would pay a cut to the city?

Ever since my first uber ride I've never taken a normal taxi.

They're terrible. Zero focus on customer service. Shady ass drivers who will try to rip you off. And stinky gross cars that are not well maintained.

Uber is the future. Phone Post 3.0

I hate cabs in this city. I am going to figure out how to use Uber now.

I can get a ride with whoever I want and pay them if I want to.

I don't understand getting the Govt involved, is this a communist country?

Am I missing something?

The drivers are the worst. They ALWAYS try and keep your money for a tip. They always try to round up for themselves but never will they round down when its more convenient.

In Hong Kong there are tons of Taxi drivers that drive for Uber too.

Can't they do both there.

I used Uber all the time in Los Angeles. Not even a comparison to taxis.

I don't know why anyone needs to pay fees to the city to provide rides to people. Pretty shady practice imo.

As soon as people figure out a way to make things comfortable, easy and convenient, someone (usually in government) wants to screw it up.

Taxis are shitty except for a very rare exception.

Ubers are mostly really nice except for a very rare exception.

Taxi commissions have no argument here.

One of my accounts through the shop I work at is metro cars. They pretty much aren't fixing fleet right now because they lost almost 60% to uber. Phone Post 3.0

if you are doing any business in a city, you usually have to pay some form of tax. for stationary business, you have to pay property tax. the tax should go to law enforcement, garbage, and other services.

so the idea of the municipal guv taking money isn't new. in many countries, to even drive, you pay a toll tax. even in the states, you pay toll taxes.

the cabbies pay tax. either they should not pay tax, or a ride based business should because they have an unfair advantage, from what i see.

Just sent this to Jeremy Hamilton but I figure why not share it with the thread... If you don't have Uber you may as well take 20 bucks in free rides and help an OGer in the process.

-----------------
Download the Uber app using this link and we each get 20 bucks of free Uber rides. Works like a charm. When you have your own account you'll get a sharing code too and then anytime someone uses your code you'll get $20. It's sweet!

Nailed it.

Emailed receipts make expense reports so easy for frequent business travelers. Phone Post 3.0

Fuck Toronto cabs! Terrible service. Uber cabs are half the price, and the drivers are pleasant.

Do they think they're doing themselves a favour by making customers lives more difficult with this crap? The same ones they are trying to win back

when I lived in annapolis years back the taxi drivers were complaining about the hotel shuttle services taking their business. It's nothing new.

Taxi drivers do need to pay "medallion fees" in many cites. It's a way of tracking peoples income so they can't check on their taxes.

Not paying fees makes it easier for uber drivers to make a profit, of course the taxi drivers will fight it.

Nobody is making them be Taxi drivers, why don't they just quit and become Uber drivers if it's so much more profitable?

Nothing I hate more than people making their problems my problem.

When I want something do I get to block everyone and fuck with their lives?
