Teaching a shrimping class

Next week I'm going to be guest instructing at a friend's BJJ school, teaching both a beginner and advanced class. Initially I planned to teach the basic shrimping motion to the beginners. As I started practicing my own shrimping motion and really breaking it down, I came to realize that I shrimp at least 4 different ways depending on what my intentions are and how much space I have. For the first time ever in my BJJ training it really occurred to me how a basic move like the shrimp can have an advanced level of understanding. Consequently, I have changed my initial game plan and intend to focus the entire advanced class around the shrimping motion. It will be interesting to see how that goes.

#1 Escape my hips to the side using my same side foot to push off the ground while thrusting my arms forward as if blocking my opponent's hips.

#2 Escape my hips up and to the side using my same side foot to push off the ground while bringing my elbow in close to my ribs ready to turn to my stomach if necessary.

#3 Escape my hips to the side using my same side foot to push off the ground while bringing my other knee as close to my forehead as possible.

#4 Any of the above three, but this time using both feet to push off the ground instead of one. When I use both feet there's a slight hip shuffle that precedes the hip escape.

In general, I like to have the same side foot planted on the ground at all time, even after I've finished the hip escape, because it allows me to transition quickly with another hip escape (forward, backward, or sideways) if I need to.

Just remember, it's a beginner class. What I mean by that is sometimes an advanced practitioner will truly appreciate the simple changes adjusting and improving your shrimping will make... Beginners will sometimes lose interest quickly because they don't understand the importance of what your showing. In my personal experience it's good to show some solid fundamental techniques like what your planning, but and some "sprinkles" through out to keep the interest. Just advise though, you should video the techniques because I'm interested to see what you've come up with. Phone Post

 Raphael Abi-Rihan taught us the two foot pushing shrimp. I’ve been trying to practice it more since it seems to different from doing it the way I was taught. At the start of his seminars, he had everyone shrimp and it was pretty cool to see how people did it different. I thought it would be boring learning shrimping again but the explanation and practice made it interesting.

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

If you don't mind my asking, what in particular blew your mind? Were there any details that you wouldn't mind sharing?

I've been noticing that i shrimp different ways here lately.  I wish i could attend your class.

 I think the post above stating that advanced practitioners would take more from this is absolutely right. Discussing the variations and the fundamentals is fine, but make them practice the fundamentals and move on afterwards. As long as they know that there are differences for the advanced practitioner they will respect that fact and may pursue them themselves. I think you will lose them if you focus on those and those only during the class, even if you put them in context.

Yeah, my plan is to save the shrimping stuff for the advanced class, because as people have mentioned, the beginners may get easily bored and not understand or appreciate the importance of hip escapes. They just want to choke people! LOL.

he just had so many details, mostly on hips and where to postion the foot on the ground and shrimping the repostioning the same foot again for more angle.
