Tell me about the Calf Slicer

I've seen demos on YouTube of a calf slicer and can only remember one person using it to win a fight (Menjivar vs JLau).

Last night on TUF, Junie kept saying he caught Efrain in a calf cutter while doing evaluations. This got me wondering for those of you that train, how many drill this sub? I've never seen anyone really go for one before. Why is that?

Thanks

Partly because it's easy to get your face pounded in while applying the submission.

Correct. I'll go for it a lot in grappling, not so much in MMA :)

Generally it can do damage before the guy taps, even if he does. and you can get damaged worse in the meantime.

well some slicers are illegal in BJJ competitions.

they are some painful ass submissions, but the only person i've ever seen tap to it was Joe Lauzon.

like JasonVee says, going for the sub means you'll get your face pounded in a little bit

more risky sub for MMA than BJJ

When guys force their leg to stay bent in a kneebar, it's a good back-up plan. You can also get it from different angle on the bottom...but like others have mentioned, you're gonna get hit.

I love doing them while rolling but i doubt my instructor nor partners approve of me doing them :)

They definitely hurt like a bitch.

The best sub I ever landed was a calf slicer/rear naked choke. I was in half guard and slid around and took this guys back. Both my leg and his were in perfect position to get the calf slicer and as I went for it I grabbed around his neck to get leverage to control the position. He was off balance from the transition of me taking his back so he fell backwards (while in the calf slicer basically forcing his heel to touch his ass with my shin perfectly placed in between) right into a deep rear naked choke. He was gagging in pain and tapping with everything he had so while the RNC was hardly necessary it made for a hell of a highlight.

As a caveat, before anyone complains about etiquette, this guy was a real asshole. There was definitely no remorse landing this one.

TTT

Does anyone know why muscle compressions are illegel in some tournaments that allow neck cranks and heel hooks?

doing a calf slicer is a good way to get arm barred.

that vid is the most homo-erotic thing i've ever seen!

i like it.

They hurt for a couple of days if done right.

Hmmm...I have done calf slicers training in MMA (I dont compete just train) and I am out of position to get hit and they tap so fast their not going to be hitting much.
I consider it a low percentage move since I dont have any great setups to catch it but it pops up once in awhile.

hard to set up and pull off

Works awesome if you blow a twister
