I slept on one recently and has a REALLY good sleep and I am thinking about getting one. Anyone have one?? What do you think of it?
It depends on how much you value sleep & how good your sleep already is without one.
I sleep way too little (lifestyle bad habit) and some time ago realized that it could directly affect my health. I came to the conclusion that every hour I do sleep needs to be quality sleep. After investing weeks of research & comparing all kinds of mattresses I broke down and got one. While I still don't let myself sleep much longer I do sleep better now.
They are not pure gimmicks but are definitely way expensive. My advice is not to get one if you sleep well already, but to get one if you find yourself waking up a lot due to your position making you sore -- in which case they might help you.
I like them a lot. I use a 3" mattress topper that we got from Overstock.com and it made a huge improvement in the quality of my sleep.
There are a lot of companies selling the same mattress for a lot less money, so do some looking around.
The key thing to look for is the density of the material. The cheap knock-offs use a much lower density product that does not provide anywhere near the same level of comfort.
You should be able to get an identical product to what Tempurpedic sells for less than 50% of the price.
mudbone, so the knoff-off stuff is too "soft"?
"You should be able to get an identical product to what Tempurpedic sells for less than 50% of the price. "
where?
I use a tempurdic mattress topper. It does at a degree of comfort, and my mattree is only a year old.
$99 at BJ's...not a bad investment.
Jack - yes, the bad knockoff stuff is too soft. Tempurpedic is 5 lb density. The really cheap knockoffs are usually 3lb. If you try them side by side there is a HUGE difference.
There are a lot of places selling knockoff mattresses, do a search for "swedish foam" or "memory foam" on Google or eBay. We got our mattress topper from Overstock.com and really like it. It smells awful for the first few days, but then it is great.
If you look at what a quality regular matress costs, you'll see that memory foam matresses are not that outrageous.
We got ours from the Healthy Back Store. They sell Tempur-Pedig too, but we got their brand as it had a better warranty. I had Tempur-Pedic pillows before that broke down after about a year and a half. The Healthy Back pillows and matress have been great for us.
Bear in mind, that foam matresses are a little hotter than regular ones. I've seen reveiws by people who thought this was a show stopper.
If you have a Healthy Back Store in your area, go in and check them all out. They have like four different brands.

How can you tell if it is a "good" one or not?
My friend is visiting HK and said they are selling the foam toppers there for a cheaper price.
But how can we tell the quality of it?
Sorry to take 3 days to respond, was away most of the weekend.
When we bought ours, the label on the topper said 5lb. I realize that some unscrupulous retailer could label things incorrectly, so the best thing to do is to give it a squeeze. You should check out Tempurpedic first so that you know what it feels like. If you can lie down on it, that is the best test.
I'm about 225 lbs, and when I tried to lie down on a cheap one, it felt a lot different than the Tempur.
The one we got from overstock.com was perfect.
I highly reccomend it. All the above posts are correct. the 5lb density is the way to go. If you get less sleep than normal than this will help getting better sleep. I will never have any other mattress in my bedroom than the memory foam mattress. Yes it's hotter in the summer, don't use flannel sheets...
About two issues ago,Consumer Reports did a cover story on mattresses. The best mattress for you is a subjective matter. There were no differences from regualar mattresses and tempure-pedic,,or whatever the hell you call it. You do have to spend over 200 bucks on any sleeping surface,,but the only bed perfect for you, is the one you lie down on for a good ten minutes and see if your back/body likes it.Some mattress stores give a 90 day trial period for mattresses,,i think you have to pay an additional 50 bucks for scotch guaring, in case you return it,,and try another one of their mattresses. It worked for me,,the one i bought seemed great when i lied in it in the store,,but after a couple of weeks, my back was acting up,,i returned it,,tried another one,,and the second mattress worked better for me.
Lie on the mattress you're looking at,,and make sure you have the option of trading it in for another one in case your body doesn't like it.
good luck,,mattresses are a good investment on your overall health!
Tempurpedic mattresses are really comfy, and as mudbone mentions, the toppers work really well as long as you get the proper density.
From what i understand, the tempurpedic mattresses are 100% tempurpedic only from the top several inches anyway, not the entire mattress, so as long as your bottom mattress is pretty solid, a 3 inch topper will suffice.
Keep in mind too that there isnt much solid evidence that it actually improves back health. Its a good nite sleep though. Thats reason enough.
whaddaya mean hotter? Are we venturing into the realm of discomfort, when you talk about hotter?
