The latest Total Fight Challenge co-main event of the evening featured hometown favorite and Team Jeff Neal/Carlson Gracie fighter Adriel Villa defeating Mark Palbykin. The win for Villa via referee stoppage due to strikes from the side mount resembled the finish made famous by Matt Hughes in his victories over B.J. Penn and Carlos Newton.

Villa secured the early takedown in the first and worked his ground and pound before passing to half-guard and attempting a hammerlock. Palbykin skillfully worked out of the submission attempt by sweeping Villa, but did not seem to want to work out of Villa’s guard and the fighters returned to their feet. Standing, both fighters worked their respective styles with Palbykin landing some heavy strikes including a couple head kicks that caused Villa to clinch up and work his Jiu-Jitsu for takedowns.

After a competitive first round, Villa dominated the second securing the takedown and used strikes to pass to side mount. He then pinned Palbykin’s arm to the mat and followed up with unabated strikes to the head, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight at 3:46 of the second round.

The other main event fight featured a razor close decision as Jason Tabor defeated Charles Wilson via split decision. Wilson used his unorthodox striking stance to keep Tabor off balance on the feet, but his body kicks were repeatedly caught by Tabor throughout the fight and used to secure takedowns. Wilson showed a good ground game, nearly submitting Tabor twice from his guard with a deep kimura in the first and a triangle choke in the third that looked to be the end of the fight. Tabor fought out of both submission attempts and used his superior wrestling to take Wilson’s back and land some heavy hammer fists. In the end the judges rendered a split decision with two judges scoring it for Tabor (29-28 and 30-27) and one for Wilson (29-28). The fight could have easily gone either way and a rematch could be in store at the next Total Fight Challenge.
