The body triangle is a stalling position

In wrestling it’s illegal for that reason mainly. Grant Dawson did a great job getting there but he mostly stalled in that position. Had he been on top the fight would’ve stood up numerous times. I did like to hear him talking about training to fight in that way strategically which is a lost art in MMA. Most guys don’t do that anymore.

Didn’t Ivan Salavary break Tony Fryklund‘s back with the body triangle? It’s a great control. Learn to unwind it. People used to say (somewhat correctly) the closed guard was a stalling position. Same with a standing clinch against the fence.

I definitely don’t want to see more rules.

He did. It can cause injuries as well but in MMA it is mostly used as a stalling position. You shouldn’t be able to hold someone in the same position for 15 mins when a top guy wouldn’t be allowed to do the same.

I think it’s more about enforcement. Stalling is only enforced in the top position. A fighter can even stall in closed guard and be rewarded with a standup.

I had dinner with Tony literally after that fight. He was fine and an awesome human being as well.

But how would wrasslers like Islam beat featherweights without it?

It is a fair position to use for transition and or control but it is stalling.

Thats not why its illegal in wrestling its illegal cause it constricts breathing.Great move for mma

IF u look at Dawson’s record which u didn’t he has many finishes from rear choke from this position. Actually at a very high rate

I have never understood, as a lifelong wrestler, why it was illegal in wrestling even though in a freestyle tourney a guy put one on me and I posted to stand and it dislocated my finger and broke it. At the hospital they gave me the wrong shot to numb it and almost had to amputate my finger. Weirdest thing to happen to me.

Good job Buddie. Immediately thought of this as well. I couldn’t help but think since body triangles were extremely rare when this fight happened, I wonder how much of it was legit pressure vs how much was panic for perhaps never being in that position prior?

I mean that happened there and it was a finish, but that’s the only time I can recall someone finishing with a body triangle only.

Because if it was legal most matches would be a race to get that position. Same reason locking your hands is illegal in many wrestling situations.

That doesn’t matter. In this fight he shouldn’t have been allowed to hold the fight in that spot for almost all of 3 rounds when a top guy wouldn’t be allowed to.

Fighters aren’t locking the body triangle to restrict breathing. They are doing it because it’s almost impossible to escape in the confines of an MMA fight. In jiujitsu it’s a lot easier.

Body triangles are great for control and restricting your opponents breathing.
Its sucks when someone has a body triangle on you.
If I had long legs Id be body triangling fags all day…

why thats his finishing move check his record he has like 10 rear chokes…No way should they do a standup in a dominant position He used it well scored points and didnt stall and has had 10 chokes from same position
