The dynamic judo of Fabio Basile

I know this is a BJJ forum but this is such an awesome highlight that I had to post it. Fabio Basile is the F'n man. He is the 2016 Olympic champion at 66kg and now he is competing at 73kg trying to become the first judoka to win Olympic gold in two different weight categories. This highlight (2018-2020) is of him competing in the 73kg division.

His feints and combinations are so awesome to watch. It's like he puts 100% effort into a feint before exploding into another throw.

Very exciting and from what I could tell by watching his olympic run, a complete judoka, winning via newaza and tachi waza.

Was pretty cool watching two current olympic champs go at it in his match with Ono.

Yeah, Ono is definitely the favorite to win, and it will be a shocker if he doesn't, but Fabio seems like an athlete who rises to the ocassion in the biggest of events like he did when he beat the reigning world champion An Baul in the 2016 Olympics. While the postponement of the Olympics is sure to hinder a lot of judoka it could actually benefit Fabio because it gives him another year to get accostomed to the -73kg division. It also helps that Hashimoto will not be in the division, unless of course Japan chooses him over Ono. Just imagine being one of the top 3 judokas in the world in your weight division and not getting a chance to go to the Olympics because you are second best in your country.

Holy shit, his sweeps are nice!

Judo is so cool. Wish I did it when I was younger

Nice.

Ono is his biggest challenge.  Ono somehow makes him look ordinary in the matches I saw them go head to head.

Basille has to figure out how to get to Ono.  His attacks are too wild for a judoka like Ono.

Denied.

Also denied. Compare this to the successful attempt in the first gif in this thread.

To be fair Ono makes everyone look average. I don’t see Fabio changing his game the next time they meet. Fabio’s aggressiveness is what makes his judo work. Live by the sword and die by the sword. I don’t see him beating Ono by slowing his game down or being more passive.

Aaron, his attacks look desperate without any kuzushi against Ono.  I think he will need more fakes instead of "full throttle ahead". He is attacking too far from Ono, maybe afraid of being countered.  Get in closer.  All the Japanese stars are right there in your face with their attacks.

Tough match for Basile for sure. I'm guessing that Ono is naturally bigger too.

From a physicality point of view the Japanese have tremendous hip/leg size/strength.   You should see my sensei in his 70's do leg splits like a 14 yr old gymnist. And it is natural, no strain.
