The Fight That Ruined MMA

Couture-Vera

Wall and stall and wall humping were rewarded over damaging strikes and knockdowns. Randy's win launched a million horribly boring gameplans. Just Bleed became Just Win.

Lol, didn't danthewolfman try to take credit for teaching randy that? Phone Post 3.0

haha You may be right if that was the actual first one of those fights. Phone Post 3.0

That fight was a robbery, felt real bad for Vera after the decision

Actually a good thread, I remember that fight and being surprised at the decision..., that's when "dirty boxing" started being talked about and became popular Phone Post 3.0

Dirty Boxing was recognized a decade before, my man. Phone Post 3.0

St. Pierre-Serra. Serra knocked the exciting right out of Georges. From that point on he wasn't the exciting finisher he used to be. Everyone followed his lead.

Lolwut

Wall n stall was hardly new, pretty sure only the hardcores even watched that fight Phone Post 3.0

That fight saw Vera take Randy down, knock him down, and nearly finish him.

And still lose to 200 short punches against the fence as Randy "controlled" the action.

The decision blew.

Vera didn't help his cause by entering into s few clinches he didn't need to. But randy literally avoided the fight.

Vera got robbed Phone Post 3.0

MMA isn't ruined. So...

Wall & stall wasn't invented with that fight but it was a horrible decision none the less. Phone Post 3.0

look at militech vs Burnett for wall and stall 10000 years before that fightr :)

Hell, before they changed the rules, wall and stall was done against the fence by holding it on the MAT with Gurgel vs Bohlander. lol

Yeah luckily not many people saw that fight. It was a UK card and SPIKE delayed it until 9pm for everyone in the states when the fight had already been over for 6 hours. Phone Post 3.0

da Vinci 81 - Lol, didn't danthewolfman try to take credit for teaching randy that? Phone Post 3.0
it's sadly ironic that the man who contributed so many dazzling offensive moves and concepts to the MMA lexicon is ultimately singlehandedly responsible for its demise at the hands of one of his defensive innovations Phone Post 3.0

Miletich/Burnett is literally the only time Ive ever thrown anything at the tv.

Pat was a brilliant pioneer but he clearly felt Mikey was way too physical for him so he decided to just shut down the entire fight and do nothing while holding onto Mikey's shorts.

There is no action. NOTHING happens for the entirety of the championship fight. Then Mi

key gets frustrating and hits Pat low which results in a penalty and the judges at the end score the fight for Pat due to that.

Then Bob Meyrowitz comes in and tells Pat what an amazing fight it was and that it was one for the ages.............................................................................................

Maybe I wasn't clear in my OP.

I know that wall and stall wasn't invented in that fight, but that's when it was used to get a decision when the other guy was dropping, hurting and taking down the guy who was trying to cage press only.

Randy was like 700 years old, he did the only thing he could do. The problem wasn't him, it was the judges giving him the win and rewarding that kind of bullshit instead of Vera's damage.

Randy relied on the cage to win fights more than anyone in mma history imo, he would have got smashed in PRIDE. Phone Post 3.0

I feel like the wall and stall game plan has been around a little longer than that, but I remember that fight being very frustrating to watch as well. Phone Post 3.0
