The Historical Significance of Brock at #1

MMA rankings are now a BCS style ranking- i.e. you don't have to knock off the #1 guy to BE ranked #1 now. Much like the BCS, you need certain circumstances across the board then re-evaluate the whole ranking (Wisconsin did not become #1 by beating OSU)

NHB had a kind of "definitive" feel to it- you had to beat the man to become the man. Now, like college football, you can become a defacto #1 which, in my mind, is disappointing. Thanks for the good post, WB. Phone Post

subbed. btw its threads like these that would have made 100 ppp a living hell

we cant thank you enough for these threads whistleblower

Yes we witnessed a quality fight. Two heavyweight fighters of such profound skill that one turned and ran from punches and the other was likely to have a coronary if the "championship" match had made it into the 3rd round. Lol

^^and what about Brock's opponents? Heath certainly has fallen away. Randy is way up in age and has a spotty record at best as of late. Mir is, well, he's Mir... Take him for what he's worth. And Carwin showed that he needs to work on conditioning to get through more rounds. I don't see how Sylvia, Arlovski, etc. are more devaluing to Fedor's status than Brock's are to his. Phone Post

RJJH -
DaemonDragon - Absolutely excellent read. Great work whistleblower.

whistleblower - In fact, since the end of 1997, the UFC had not had a single HW fighting in its octagon who was either ranked #1 or generally recognized as the absolute best (i.e., the one who would have been favored to beat every other HW, or fighter, in the sport at that point).

I have to disagree on this detail - being favored over everyone else isn't the critera by which Brock is #1, because there's little question that he'd be the betting underdog to Fedor. Yet Fedor doesn't deserve to be #1 ranked over Brock because that's based on wins/losses.

how so, they both have 1 loss. and I am almost certian that Fedor's win % is better than Brock's

Brock = 83%

Fedor = 93%

if you take away the hype of everyone and everything that is MMA and just look at stats. Fedor is the far superior person to be ranked #1.
or Werdum. because to be the man you gotta beat the man, kinda thing. by no means does this make Brock any less impressive. it just means that he is not #1. and who gives a fuck? he is #1 in the UFC and that's all that matters to the UFC and primarily UFC fans.

Back handed blow or not, I appreciate whistle blowers input on these boards.  His silly opinion notwithstanding, he does post the facts.  I respect that and have compassion for him and others who have to deal with Fedor fading away as his skills and ability diminish.

As for looking at the stats, those point in Brock's favor.  Again. we are talking current rankings.  If we compare what has happened over the past 2 years:

Fedor: 2-1 including a submission loss

Brock: 4-0 including 3 consecutive wins over UFC champions by finish.

To bring up Fedor's wins over guys like Lindland, Choi, Zulu, etc that happened years ago is silly when compiling current rankings.

As Whistle blower points out, Brock has accomplished what no other has.  He has brought back the top ranking to the UFC heavyweight strap and he did it while being very sick and incredibly early in his MMA career.  No one can boast to having accomplished so much, so quickly.

Great read, thanks whistle

whistleblower = best poster on this board.

"b/c brock's opponents are STILL ranked and active against quality competition..."

Really??? Who's still ranked top 10 besides Carwin? Is Randy top 10? Is HH? Is Mir? If Mir is, that's a joke then. I won't even mention Brock's very first opponent. Phone Post

Why is Mir being ranked in the top ten a joke?

Don't forget Cain, he's top 5.  And why exclude Carwin?

take a look at Fedors list of wins in the first part of his career.

im sure Lesnar could have alot more wins if he was fighting the elite competion Fedor was when he was first starting out.

Sin, read my post. I didn't exclude Carwin. And yes, if Brett Rogers at #10 is joke to you guys, then Mir at 7 is. Phone Post

I read it as if you were discounting Carwin and only wanting to focus on Randy and Mir.  Where do you rank Mir if not in the top 10and who's ahead of him?

And even if Fierce Dragon wants to include Mir as "ranked and active" that's still only 2 people (Carwin and Mir) HH is mia, Randy is acting, and I didn't include Cain cuz he hasn't even fought him yet! Phone Post

Excellent posts.

Brock will lose more than Fedor will over the next couple of years and will never again be on top like he is now.  Fedor might regain his W#1 rank soon enough.  Brock is a paper W#1.

Fair enough.  Cain is still his opponent though.  It shows a willingness to fight top ranked opponents where others refuse to do so.

 Brock

Cain

JDS

Overeem

Werdum

Carwin

Fedor

Big Foot

Mir

What 2 guys belong on that list that would push Mir out of the top 10?
