I believe that the lead hand straight and jab are actually "different" punches. A long time ago I asked about it in rec.m-a and Frank Benn did a really great answer.
Thanx for telling me the difference between a lead hand vertical strike and a jab...no wonder my pro career never blossomed.
Pretty much sums up my three years of instruction by a JKD guy...all I learned was how to pat a jab...
