The Problem With UFC From A Casual Fan Perspective

CarlClendenin - Too many weight classes, too many fighters to keep up with.

The fights last night weren't that bad, but most of the guys were unknown. I don't mind seeing fights like that if I knew who to root for.

Note to Dana White - the sport will not sell itself. Start selling me who the fighters are. Lidell, Brock, Diaz, etc.

Oh, and stop creating weight classes just so every main event is a title fight. I can't name 10 fighters under 155 pounds. Every main event should be a title fight (Franklin vs Wand) but stop creating weight classes just to have title fights every 2 weeks.

Cant name 10 under 155? Aldo, Mendes, Zombie, Hominick, McDonald, Faber, Cruz, Barao, Bowles, Roop, Torres, Brown, Creepy, Johnston, Benevidez and thats just the top of the food chain.. come on step your game up son before you start criticizing the divisions, i just gave you 15 beasts off the top of the dome.. try watching a fight sometime Phone Post

If anything more weight classes are good for casual fans. Casual fans can understand a title fight, if there were only 4 titles and those guys fought max 3 times a year it would be hard to find title fights or top contender fights to fill all these cards Phone Post

I'm starting to really wonder if the "casual" MMA fan, might just be the dumbest sports fans on the planet.  They can't keep up with 10 weight classes?  Come on, even the rednecks in Alabama can keep track of their local colleges NCAA program' 5 or 6 different sports and can name half the nobodies there.  Not to mention, because of their own stupidity they think the rest of us, that are intelligent enough to keep up with the fighters, shouldn't be able to see the best fighters in the lower weight classes in the world.

Fuck, I'd rather see the majority of HW's cut before I'd rather see the lower guys cut.  I'd rather watch two, fast, technical fighters than watch two fat fucks gas out after throwing haymakers at each other for 30 seconds and then decide to lay against the cage for the rest of the fight.

The fact is, if there were no stinkers on last nights PPV card, nobody would be having this conversation. Even with no big names, everyone was buzzing about how crazy good the fights were, right up until the final four.

Three lackluster fights and everyone goes into DOOM AND GLOOM mode. At least until the next card, which everyone complaining today will still end up watching.

Exciting fights (i.e. exciting fighters) sell the sport. IMO most light-weight fighters are awesome. Where the UFC sucks is putting out fights that nobody ever cared obout in the first place like Tito-Forest.

jaysonv2277 - So we should dilute the sport by taking away the lower weight classes(where majority of the fights are phenomenal) because casual fans such as yourself refuse to/can't/wont get to know the sport better?

You say stop creating weight classes as an excuse to create title fights and yet you say EVERY main event should be a title fight?

How far is your head up your ass?

Yes, because big names (or name cuz everybody was counting on Lombard providing fireworks) didn't deliver it's obviously a dissapoint huge enough to shadow what's happened earlier.

Trobule is ppl know guys like Lombard only from his highlight reels. It's not like he's knocking out everybody in 5 seconds, everytime he fights.
Even a guy like him has lackluster fights on his resume, everybody does actually.
Same thing for Ebersole - he usually is very exciting, but yesterday wasn't that day and that's it.

Me personally - couldn't care less, because I know that usually there is at least one or two fights on the card which fail to deliver, there's no going around that.

But not always undercard is as great as this one - every single fight kicked ass and that makes up for this shitfest in the MC. I might be a bit light on that one cuz I'm watching main cards for free on TV :D
Good thing about living in Europe - no fuckin PPV :D

with all the weight classes and events, ufc/mma fans will become more and more like boxing fans, watching only the guys they really care about. not a lot of people have the time/energy/interest in keeping up with over 500 guys and 8 weight classes. i can see this working exactly the opposite of the way ufc wants. there are so many events now, that it is impossible to watch even close to every single one and live a normal life. it gets to the point where if you can't watch all of them, you might as well only watch the ones that really feel like an event.

Really?  How is it not possible?  A lot of times I watch the fights while leading my regular routine.  I like playing poker on Saturday afternoons, so I go down to the Casino, kindly ask the houseman to turn on Sportsnet so I can watch the prelims and play for a couple of hours.  Then, depending on the card, I may head out to the lounge to watch it on the big screen, or if it's a card I'd really like to focus on, I'll head home and order it.  The only cards I miss are ones like last night, where I was at work.  Oh well, shit happens.

I honestly don't see how following MMA is really any different than following any other sport.  I've seen probably 95% of the events since UFC 50 (which was the first card when I started following the sport heavily) and done so with very few alterations to my personal schedule.

You don't whine cuz you care about the fight itself, not the names that are fighting.
I'm surprised by the sheer volume of whining as of late in MMA community.

10 years ago sport was fuckin non existant compared to what we have here, it gone all the way up to the level where you've got excellent fights pretty much every week, but oh no let's start whining cuz it's too much...

I didn't know half of the guys on yesterday's undercard and now I know. I don't have to know what they eat for breakfast or what their momma is doing on sunday to enjoy the fight.

Too many fighters? There's stuff for casuals and its called Ultimate Knockouts go watch that

 here is the truth

155 fun guys to watch : Guillard, Diaz, Petis, Henderson, Edgar, Maynard

145 aldo, zombie

135 barao

thats 70 percent of the fighters in the ufc in those divisions there is 8 that are fun watches

With Americans getting fatter and fatter they have less and less in common with the average bantamweight.

Add Superheavyweight, sorry Uncle Creepy.

HEY! Just because there's a high probability that I might find a hidden automobile if I chose to mow my lawn today doesn't mean I have to take this abuse.
