CarlClendenin - Too many weight classes, too many fighters to keep up with.
The fights last night weren't that bad, but most of the guys were unknown. I don't mind seeing fights like that if I knew who to root for.
Note to Dana White - the sport will not sell itself. Start selling me who the fighters are. Lidell, Brock, Diaz, etc.
Oh, and stop creating weight classes just so every main event is a title fight. I can't name 10 fighters under 155 pounds. Every main event should be a title fight (Franklin vs Wand) but stop creating weight classes just to have title fights every 2 weeks.
Cant name 10 under 155? Aldo, Mendes, Zombie, Hominick, McDonald, Faber, Cruz, Barao, Bowles, Roop, Torres, Brown, Creepy, Johnston, Benevidez and thats just the top of the food chain.. come on step your game up son before you start criticizing the divisions, i just gave you 15 beasts off the top of the dome.. try watching a fight sometime
You seriously named George Roop?
A guy's argument is that the UFC lacks star names like Liddell or Brock with the influx of these lower weights and you named GEORGE ROOP?
Chuck Liddell could take a hangover shit while Brock Lesnar pisses and more fans would hang by the bathroom to meet both than to go watch George Roop fight.
Yes, Roop is a solid fighter at a lower weight.
However you are insane to argue Roop as if that somehow serves to prove the lower weights can draw money or be as important as big stars at heavier weights.
Holy fuck.
You are like someone saying they wished Marlon Brando was still here to make movies and you said, "Hey man, Shia LeBeauf is here. Clearly you don't watch new movies."
Because mentioning GEORGE ROOP after someone says Liddell or Brock is like comparing Shia to Brando.

Damn i musta been sleep typing when i made all those myriad comparisons between george roop and chuck fuckin liddel.. how did i miss that? Hmmm... yea so anyway as i said the first time dipshit it aint that hard to name 10 fighters under 155.. he was the tenth name i mentioned and nobody said shit about him being on liddels level of draw power.. regardless, chuck would have never had any draw power if there wasnt a 205 lb division for him to fight in.. moral of the story, what mma fan gets upset about there being more mma to watch.. shit make more divisions Id watch 2 100lb anorexic ally mcbeal lookin ass mawfuckas fly around the octagon for 25 min wit a smile on my face
ufc98newb - with all the weight classes and events, ufc/mma fans will become more and more like boxing fans, watching only the guys they really care about. not a lot of people have the time/energy/interest in keeping up with over 500 guys and 8 weight classes. i can see this working exactly the opposite of the way ufc wants. there are so many events now, that it is impossible to watch even close to every single one and live a normal life. it gets to the point where if you can't watch all of them, you might as well only watch the ones that really feel like an event.
Really? How is it not possible? A lot of times I watch the fights while leading my regular routine. I like playing poker on Saturday afternoons, so I go down to the Casino, kindly ask the houseman to turn on Sportsnet so I can watch the prelims and play for a couple of hours. Then, depending on the card, I may head out to the lounge to watch it on the big screen, or if it's a card I'd really like to focus on, I'll head home and order it. The only cards I miss are ones like last night, where I was at work. Oh well, shit happens.
I honestly don't see how following MMA is really any different than following any other sport. I've seen probably 95% of the events since UFC 50 (which was the first card when I started following the sport heavily) and done so with very few alterations to my personal schedule.
not impossible for everybody, but a lot of people in that 18-34 demographic the ufc depends on to make money like to go out on saturday nights, live life on the weekends. just this summer i have had to leave a wedding reception early to watch anderson vs. chael, im visiting family out of town the weekend on ufc on fox 4, and just plain not willing to pay $55 to watch a guy like faber lead a ppv. that is just within a one month period. there are plenty of people willing to plan 30+ weekends of their life around zuffa events, but there are not enough people like you for zuffa to get the kind of numbers they would like.
there are certain events that im willing to stop my life for, and there are events im becoming more and more inclined to wait until sunday afternoon to read about. and to the guys saying they don't need to know everything about every fighter, etc. don't discount emotional investment in sports fan interest level. there is a reason why most people follow specific teams, players, etc...millions of people operate that way, so don't act like it defies human nature.

Moral of the story.. I won't. Neither will the rest of the casual fans.
If you were Dana who would you cater to? You're watching anything they put out anyway.. keep that in mind.
Masakyst - The fact is, if there were no stinkers on last nights PPV card, nobody would be having this conversation. Even with no big names, everyone was buzzing about how crazy good the fights were, right up until the final four.
Three lackluster fights and everyone goes into DOOM AND GLOOM mode. At least until the next card, which everyone complaining today will still end up watching.
Not true. Re-read what I said. I said if I knew and cared who they were, there wouldn't be as much of a fuss about it all.
Save for Kongo. That man is flat out boring. But I could've lived with that if I knew everyone else fighting.
- Casuals can't keep up with 10 weight classes and 20 fighters in each class. - UFC/Zuffa doesn't want a fighter to gain too much popularity. - Scheduling events 4 months in advance loses it's hype. Not to mention injuries.
