More than age, not working with a top camp, lack of BJJ, size disadvantage, level of his comp, loss of muscle mass, slowing down etc. the thing that turned Fedor from the GOAT to a regular MMA HW was that he fell in love with his punching power.
Prior to coming to America, the knock on Fedor was his lack of one shot big punches (Not counting Zulu) and that he used his punches to close the distance to initiate clinch or used accumlation of shots to finish.
That all changed with 3 fights: Sylvia, Arlovski and Rogers. Fedor went from a "Brown belt in everything" to a guy who relied on a big bomb right hand. He fell in love with his punching power and didn't look so hot in other areas. This is obvious in the Werdum fight where Fedor mistakenly believes he has Werdum in trouble and disregards the sub attempts with the single minded notion that he's going to finish with punches. By the looks of the Silva fight, it appears that he only intended to throw haymakers.

Yes, but he wasn't single minded in his approach like he became after Sylvia. He could have clowned Arlovski and Rogers on the ground from the top and instead he just hung around waiting to uncork a KO shot on the feet. He wasn't reckless in the Nog rematch. He fought smart and measured.
Tyson also abandoned what got him to the top and relied on power punches and nothing but when his ship started sinking

As for OP, I agree somewhat yea. I think the best thing about Fedor was he basically was never in a boring fight, fought to his opponents strengths alot of the time, and because of that always put on a exciting fight. It was due to catch up to him, and with the skill gap between the large 265+ HWs closing it couldnt last forever. Glad he fought the way he did all these years, it gave us alot of awesome fights, in a mostly dull division. From a small, chubby HW.

When people say he was "always over rated" I just always ask who was better then him at HW from 2002-2008? I mean you can argue from 2009 on the new breed of today would of beat him, and yea in hindsight I think they probably would but 80% of his career I just dont think there was anyone better then him from 2000-2008, 2002-2008 without question really.
