irishrottie - No maia on the list but you put in roger gracie? at no.1? Who has he tapped in the top 10 ten....even top 20?
Its isnt just about submissions but also positions.
Also Ronda is a judoka not a bjj player, maybe change the title to best grapplers.
ronda does train BJJ however she is a Judo player too. Her game is not purely Judo.. It's not the Top ten MMA fighters in MMA its the TOP 10 BJJ players in MMA.. Maia hasn't had a sub since 09 -
This is true, but her BJJ is not even in the same universe as Maias, not even close. Sure it looks amazing against her competition and is really good but you keep saying submissions like thats all there is to BJJ.
Weird list, imo. Jacare immediately came to mind. He's a wizard. Rousey might have a nice transition to armbar, but I haven't seen a complete game that would put her on that list. Monson? Maia? lulz
diggity -
Thanks for taking the time to do this. If people disagree, do your own list or at least be respectful. Content like this adds to the discussion on here. Why bother just pissing on it by saying 'list is a joke'. Come up with an alternative and contribute. Thanks OP.

Rousey isn't a "judo player too". She is an olympic medal winning judoka who fights mma, and supplements her training with bjj, just like virtually all mma fighters do.
Also, according to many bjj purists, her armbar is "incorrect". lol
If you are going to make a list of the best bjj players in mma, you ought to look for fighters whose base style is bjj. Just sayin.
*note, I'm not bashing bjj or rousey in any way shape or form. I just don't believe she belongs on the list. Change bjj players to grapplers, as someone said, and for sure she could be on there.
Rhonda, has amazing armbars, but she did get her back taken by Tate, and controlled quite a bit. She is amazing with her Judo and armbars, but i think it has a bit more to do with the lack of real skill in women's mma. Although she is great, for the reason above i can't say we can definately say she is a top ten grappler in all of mma.
I'm a HUGE fan of Robert Drysdale, but since he has only fought lower tier guys so far, he still has more to prove against guys in the UFC. I would rank Demian Maia higher than him. If you look at Demian's mma career, he went 11-0 8 submissions, 5 straight in the UFC. That would beat really any other record on this list. Just because he had losses the last couple years does not mean he lost his grappling ability. He is just fighting tougher guys.
I don't think there's anything more annoying to me (as a fan) than when a guy blows off his skillset like Maia. Super great guy and just unbelievable on the ground. Then he's in all these thai boxing matches! I enjoyed his last fight and first at 170 where he definitely pushed back to his roots. Jacare can do it sometimes too. It's almost hard to remember him starting a fight off in Dream with a flying triangle. I know it can come down to winning in a boring way or losing in an exciting manner, but damn!
ps (still 100% believe Maia should have gotten the nod against Munoz).

BrCutter I agree with you for the most part, but the only guys Maia didn't really try to take down were Munoz and Weidman, the two people he never had a chance at taking down. He even lost a round in the Munoz fight for shooting too deep on a double and getting beat up from the sprawl position. Regardless he won that fight IMO.
