I know many think Askrens style is boreing but i'm always impressed when a specialist can impose their will on more well rounded fighters. Unless you are a Ninja or can foresee the future, that is difficult to do when you are already in forward motion. Remember, we are talking about “1 second” to react, as you are in mid-step forward.
Most people would flinch and bring their arms to their face as they duck.

low head could end up in KO in many different ways
head low against a sprinting masvidal is just sick...he was training that move and it had a lot of power...that is a comfortable haymaker for him....the anti predictable grappler- wildman knee

Honestly I think Ben has the worst stand up in the last 15 years .Jake shields might be the closest that I've seen to that bad

Jake Shields looks stiff and awkward with his stand up, but he's actually very experienced with his own striking game.
He has gone toe to toe with guys who are vastly better at striking like GSP and Woodley.
It's only been recently, at 40 years old, that Jake has been caught clean with standing strikes at range.

Who’s anyone? And as an experienced pro MMA fighter, Masvidal was counting on that grappler’s reaction. Its called strategy.
It would have been a lot more “shit happens” if Masvidal would have timed it as a counter to Ben’s shoot ala Romero/Weidman but when someone runs at you, a flying knee is the only thing that can happen - maybe a flying sidekick like Werdum. But no one runs at you to punch you like that. Ben’s reaction is exactly what did him in.
Knees to counter leg shots are also integral to MMA. Khabib’s dad teaches to always keep your head on the outside when you shoot because of it. Weidman also was aware of this and shoot with his head outside against Romero for most of the fight but the one time he put his head inside, Romero took it off.

Shields was absolutely a decent striker. Very effective for someone who used grappling as their primary weapon.
